Before we talk about creating your very own original Kite by doing Steps 1 & 2; Lets go off on a slight tangent...

Daydream with a pencil and paper
Sketch front view, top view, side view, bottom view, etc.
Build a MODEL (see above) - try to do it to some scale: Use oaktag, cheap wood dowels, and lots & lots of hot glue... rd glue sticks = lo temp, oval glue sticks = hi temp. The hi-temp gun takes longer to heat up, but you can move faster cause it cools faster, so its what I like.
I do not know what that means exactly either.
But I do know that all cell kites are made of basic shapes: Triangles; Squares; Rectangles; Rhomboids (a sideways squashed square), Hexagons ( 6 sides), & Wings. And, I also know, Horizontal surfaces create LIFT; and, Vertical surfaces create STABILITY.
Therefore, Kites with more horizontal surfaces than Vertical surfaces will probably fly in less wind, assuming they weigh the same; however, they will be less stable, which probably doesnt matter if the wind is light.
Now this would be the perfect place to talk about Weight to Sail Ratio & Weight to Lift Ratio. See Topic 3 (comming soon) of the Trilogy, Weight to Lift Ratios.
See Topic 2, Fittings & How They Work, for pictures of fittings along with descriptions.
