Anyone know of any building events/workshops that take place in or around Atlanta, GA.....say within a 3 or 4 hour drive?

(could include Nashville, Knoxville, and Chattanooga in Tennessee, Birmingham and Montgomery inb Alabama, Greenville and Columbia, SC, Asheville NC, Macon or even Savannah, GA)

I can’t think of any workshops in your area but the PREMIER east cost kite building event is the Maryland Kite Society’s event over president's day weekend.

Wings Over Washington (DC area) and the Richmond Air Force (VA) also have some GREAT workshops!!!!

The Keystone Kiters (PA) also does a bang up job on their workshops!!!!

The Biggest event I have ever attended is Fort Worden in Washington State.

I have not yet attended MAKR or Junction TX yet....

If you can’t find one, start one!!!! Your AKA regional director might be a good source of information too.

BTW you might also just get a hold of people in your area and just get together with one or two at your or their home for some show and tell or one on one teaching.

I loved the 3 hours that Ken McNiel gave to me so I could just look around his professional workshop and share ideas. He builds kites professionally so he looks at things from a production standpoint and I look at them from an artisan's point of view. He is more concerned about time per kite while I don’t care how long it takes as long as I can explore new and different construction methods.

You might give Tom Powers a call, as he runs a shop in Savanah, but I dont know if he is building anymore.... I would love to see his setup and to get his hot cutting table. IIRC it was a bullet proof bank window. 3 or so inchs thick and HUGE.

For more ideas also look for sail lofts in your area, as they build LARGE kite like structures. You have not lived until you watch someone shove 100 or more yards of fabric thru a machine to see how it can be done. You might also be able to buy their scraps on the cheep or get them for free. Odd sizes and colors you might not like and some HEAVY fabrics, but sometimes you get lucky. Sadly there are none in my area as I can see the end of the earth from my front porch.
