I have try to do a test fly of the FFK today but even on top of the mountain the wind was low and very gusty.

One gust has been stong and long enough to fly the kite a few seconds.

Obviously this is a kite for seashore stable wind

HELP NEEDED

Here is the program of the FFK for september:
4/6 September - Wakeless - Antelope Island
11/19 September - pounetbf - Festival International de Cerf-Volant de Dieppe
25/26 September - mux - Quad Cities Kite Festival, Davenport, IA

This will be tricky!

If we want to fly it for the 30 years of Dieppe, time is too short to send it by mail, so we need volunteers to transport it from USA to Dieppe and back.

Who is going to Antelope Island and Dieppe ?
Who is going to Dieppe and Davenport ?
If nobody, who can receive it by mail just before going to Dieppe and post it as soon as back from Dieppe ?

Thanks a lot

The ffk is ready to fly back tu USA. It should be delivered in California Wednesday the 28th.

This is definitely a kite for stable wind, a "beach kite".In the very irregular, low, gusty and swirly wind of the montain it was very difficult to fly it

Here is a picture

An here it is with Maggi and Bernard, the very nice organisers of Vercorin

Thank you for posting these pictures and sending the kite to California.

This kite festival has a dramatic backdrop! I am sad that the winds did not work out for a nicer flight.

I hope that everyone who is taking it out to a festival is signing their name (or forum name) and the festival location and date in the large white panel at the bottom.

I hope there is someone going to Dieppe from the USA who can receive the FFK in the mail and carry it to Dieppe with their kites?

Bernard,
No wonder it flew so poorly. You have rocks on the TE.

Bernard - Looks great regardless. enjoy the pictures as well.

Not sure what to say on the tight schedule, other than if it makes it back from Dipeppe to Davenport in time then great, if not - its not the end of the world.
Thanks to you and everyone working to get this around to fly at fest!

the kite is in California two days early, (thank you Bernard)

some issues with the spars falling out were noted, so i will be doing some minor sewing on the kite

the Berkly festival is this weekend, (07/ 31-08/ 01)
expecting nice steady offshore wind so the kite should do well.

Expecting nice steady pictures!

For my edification, can you or someone else explain what is going on with the spars falling out? Is one end of the pocket coming unsewn, or are the sliding out the top of the pocket past the flap?

Oh, I went back and re-read one of Mux's posts with a picture showing the spar poking out.

Are the dowel spars I made still with the kite? They stayed in without issue. Maybe the fix is to go back to 1/8" dowel rods with glued-on vinyl end caps. Or re-sewing by capable hands (if WayWord has already done the work). No disrespect at all to Grant--thank you for making a whole new set of spars for the kite!

Both Wink
the bottom of one pocket was starting to unsew, and one spar was tending to slide out the top of the pocket. My feeling was the pocket / tunnel was a bit too large

what i did to fix the kite, was to sew the ends of the spar tunnels that had come unsewn, then i narrowed the front end where the Velcro closer is, this seemed to solve the issues when i flew the kite at Berkley.

heres the pics from the kite fest, the kite seems to have a narrow wind range between aprox 10-25 mph, to little and it wont fly, to much, and its unstable, in the morning, the wind picked up to 10 mph, and didn't get over 25mph, for about a half hour, so i got some good air time

this is a picture of the octophile.

Berkley was a great fair, and the kite does like a steady sea breeze (which i had a lot of) and lots of room to sway (which was in short supply)

Thanks for posting those pictures. Thanks for fixing the kite!

It does have a narrow window range and wanders around quite a bit. I wonder if a large sled would be better for our next forum friendship project. It would be more stable and have a wider wind range even though it also needs a steady wind. Some of the sleds could be packed with flexible spars that would allow packing.

I love to see pictures of the kite in all these great places!

How many octopi did they get together this year?
