Hey Guys, Cliff and I arrived in Iowa safe and sound. Convention hotel is really nice. There is a cool central courtyard... great place for watching some indoor flying while enjoying a beer and sandwich.
Weather is warmer than expected. I packed for 60-70 F and the last two days have been in the 80's. Today the winds were gusting 10-15 and we managed to assemble and fly Cliff's new big black condor. I'll let Cliff tell you the story about his kite later, but I have to say, he did a really fine job (except for that little reinforcement sew job )
Tonight is the opening reception and I am looking forward to meeting old and new friends. Pictures will be coming, but for now, you can view what I have HERE
Wish all of you were here! _________________ Steve Ferrel

Attended the first seminar. "Procedure for Painting Acrylic on Ripstop Nylon" by John Pollock.
John did a great job explaing his painting techniques and use of color. I'll post his handout when I get back home as it documents good info on suggested products, preparation methods, painting techniques, and final coatings. He also discussed principles of design and color harmony combinations.
His suggestion for a first time project (to enhance creativity), was to begin with the letter of your first name and paint something around it.... See the "J" in the picture above?
~~~~~~~
I was fortunate enough to meet Mr Chen last night. Thats him in he center. His translator is on the left, and the shmuck in the oragne shirt is me.
His kites are really amazing and I can't wait to see them in competition (rumor has it he is entering three categories). He will also be teaching a seminar later this week and I will try to make the class. If your not familar with his kites, you can learn more HERE
More to come......
He recently joined the AKA I presume? Just like Buteo Huang from Taiwan last year?
Now here's a conundrum... He's a master builder but will his Asian fabrications be an appropriate competition to the 'Western' methodology. Will the judges acknowledge his mastery or not? If he were to win a category would it be out of political deference or true recognition of his craft? If he were not to win, would it be a cultural snub or designation of this aesthetic under occidental perceptions. How do longtime AKA members feel about a trans-Pacific "ringer" in their competition pool??
Ahh, the subjective nature of kitebuilding competition... I'm glad I'm not competing or judging. _________________
