Hi all.
Is the 500 Metel ferrel (fmt500) the right choice for a RET505 spar? I'm guessing it is, but I just want to make sure (you never know about the .005)

Nope,

Go here

http://www.kitebuilder.com/inventory.ferrels.htm

to look up ferrels..

ret505 takes an internal ferrel FSF411

if you want to use an external ferrel you need to find something wiht and ID of slightey more than .505" like .510 inches but I dont think steve stocks such a beast...

Good Luck!!!!

Thanks Squid. I didn't know about that page.
Are internal ferrels a better choice then external ones? I have a 7 foot Rok and it uses external metel ferrels. I'm going to make an 8 foot Rok.
Hmmm, Steve appears to be out of internel ferrels altogether anyways. Sad

I wanted Carbon ferrels. I just bought the correct size solid Carbon rod from Steve and then I can cut in in short pieces for light duty places, and lonnger ones for hight stress areas. If that might work for you?

Internal or external work just fine.

I have a sport kite that has both in one place, to make extra sure...

I prefer internal as they look better to me... smooth spars... an less things to damage your fabric on...

Glad everyone here knows the correct way to spell Ferrel! Very Happy

We have TONS of internal ferrles for the 505 and squid is correct in saying that the correct size for the 505 is the FSF411. I am just behind in getting those items into the online catalog..... i know, i know i know, if its not there we cant sell it... the old man tells me all the time.

So...... untill i get caught up, just add your request to the 'comment' section durring checkout. I'll be sure to make the change on this end when i process the order. If there is anything else you need but cant find, please let me know.....

All the ferrels in the the "Ferrel Spreadsheet" are available.

Internal versus External? Well........ for pultruded Graphite I always recommend an external ferrel - either aluminum or fiberglass. You can also add an internal ferrel, but do not use an internal alone on the Graphite - there is not enough hoop strength to prevent it from splitting. HOWEVER, you can add hoop strength with a small external piece of Epoxy Tube, OR you can Thread Wrap....... how to thread wrap is another topic entirely.

For the Epoxy Tube on the other hand, I reccomend an Internal Ferrel. very often there is a smaller size Epoxy Tube that will slide into the larger size. It is more economical for you to purchase the entire spar and cut the Ferrel yourself, but if you dont like cutting, we provide all sizes in 3-4" pieces.

You can use an external ferrel for the epoxy as well , or in addition to the internal.

The way I classify our external aluminum ferrels is a little misleading, but easy to remember. For example, the FMT2400 does not have an internal diameter of .24" but it is the correct ferrel for the Carbon spar (RLG2400) that has an outside diameter of .24". The number in the codes match so you can easily figure out the correct ferrel. The inside diameter of the FMT2400 is slightly larger than .24".

Squid, the larger size aluminum ferrels (+.2400") are ALL machined in our shop. We sell them retail and wholesale all over the country! And we can make a ferrel for EVERY spar that we carry. What other kite shop provides that service??

So... does this clear up some of the confusion?

-Steve
