Anyone used umbrella febric to build kites? There are some realy interesting patterns out there. I am thinking of using it on a small quad. Any thoughts? |

Never tried it.... but believe it or not, you can use just about any kind of fabric to make a kite. I hate to say it, but for some designs, an old pillow case will work better than Ripstop!

The late Mike Decker of the Great Lakes Kite Society made a kite out of a large Hawaiian muumuu. It flew great and was quite a conversation piece.

Oh... Thats the Aerialis Team Flyers. They had some accidents during practise. If I dont remember to wrong, they broke 4 out of 6 kites at the NKM. Due to some very impressive field repair, they all flew to the end.
Doesn't sound to much a team with so many chrashes, but they are. The wind was angry, from 8 to 12 m/s, making speed control very hard.
You can see more of them at http://team.aerialis.no |

Kathy Goodwinds had some of this fabric which she says one of the kitemakers used for making his kites. (Don't remember who it was.) My husband, Jerry, just used some to make a 4' bol and we will fly it next week for the first time at Ocean Shores. The fabric had stripes, which he cut on an angle, effectively turning the project into Seminole Patchwork design. Very eyecatching on the sewing table. I'm anxious to see it in action. We plan to make matching banners, etc. |

Here is the 4' bol Jerry recently made from unbrella cloth. The cloth is a bit soft and so the wind has to catch it just right to make it open, but once it gets going, it's awsome!
The cloth was striped, so he had to do some fancy cutting to get the design he wanted.
