I am in the middle of designing a kite and would like to join some 1/8 inch Carbon at 90 degrees, and under load, but I don't want a lot of mass. I have looked at Center Tee fittings, but I want the two rods to join in the same plane. I have thought about "Leading edge to spreader" but most of those flex, and have a side I would need to cut off.

The idea is to join three 1/8 inch rods at 90 degrees and force them to bend forming a triangle with bulging sides.

Any suggestions Question

Is Vinyl or rubber tubing too cheesy for your kite?

If weight isn't an issue, get some small copper tubing (at a hobby store or certain hardware stores). There should be some with a .125" ID. You could bend it into a 90-degree angle. You might break the metal at the elbow 'corners', but the 1/8" CF may not generate enough force to matter much...

You could also make an L-shaped mold Idea and mix up some Epoxy, pour it in, let it set, then drill the holes if you have a drill press.

If you can't figure out anything homemade, I'm sure Steve/Tony can come up with a machined fitting for you.

Thanks for everyones input.

1. Vinyl or Rubber Tubing - I think that is too flexible but would be great for saving weight, and no it is NOT "too cheezy."
2. Copper tubing - I was actually thinking of trying to bend some brass Ferrels using heat to soften the center.
3. Tinker Toys-I have looked but I don't want the whole circle. Can they be cut down to a quarter circle? Do they have holes at 90 degrees? How thick would it be?
4. Molding Epoxy- I don't have the equipment.
5. ABS Fitting-see Tinkertoy

All ideas so far are helpful, please keep thinking.

Playdoh and Epoxy.

Just shape the Playdoh into a mold, pop it in the oven (low heat) for an hour or 2, let it cool, and then mix up the Epoxy and pour it in!

I'm not sure if the Playdoh will 'release' the Epoxy, so you could either coat the mold with something, or make a 'one time' mold (break-away).

I'll give it a try, just so I know.

I've used fittings and tubing from Home Depot's drip irrigation section. There are some T fittings there, as well as some of the lightest, toughest black tubing available. A hair drier or heat gun can soften the stuff for shaping.

The project is based on a stained glass window at my church. The two upper edges curve in to a point at the top. I am going to try to make the frame match this shape, and the bottom edge will have the same curve as the other two sides. The whole kite will become a serpent shape using the colors in the "head" to be sections of the tail.

I will borrow a digital camera and make pictures as I go so everyone can see/help/critique as I build.
