I have been using kind of stuff to do hot cutting until a buddy gave me a christmas gift a few years back and i thought it was a joke.
Take all the tips and pitch them they don't get hot enough, just use the stock pen and let it heat for 4 min before you start as long as you keep the tip clean it will cut 3 layers of 1.5 oz Ripstop nylon cleanly on the first try.
I never went back to my more expensive cutters after I got this. It's great for making very delicate detail cuts or just chopping off large sections of fabic. The kicker is that price and we found it half off...
One note of caution there are many others out there that look like this but DON"T work well. Look for the two heat sink fins if they are there you got the right one.
Enjoy. _________________ William Salisbury

For hot cutting the double heat reflectors work GREAT as they are normaly 40 watts or better...
The 30 Watt and under irons work better for hot tacking...
They usualy only have one heat reflector. _________________ VR/

Chisel tip.
I put up little holders around my worktable for my pen-type cutter. I use 5-inch sections of metal conduit with a flattened and drilled end to screw it to a surface. My 30W cutter is safe in these becuse the metal acts as a heatsink. I have installed switched electrcal outlets on the ceiling of my shop, so the cord is out of the way.

I've been using a Weller butane soldering iron with a blade tip for cutting. It's not much bulkier than an electric hot cutter and no cord to drag around, especially when I'm cutting large pieces of fabric.

I use three different types of hot knifes.
I use a Weller 40 watt to burn holes and irregular shapes. This goes into a soldering iron stand.
The next step up is the cutter that Steve has here. Both tips are useful.
The third is a 300 watt unit that a friend made for me that uses wood burning tips. This goes cherry red in about 5 seconds when it is turned all of the way up.
I also use a small battery powered unit for triming threads and such. _________________ Gentle breezes...

Marty,
Can you give me the info from the side of your battery unit?
I have a Kite Line Carterizer and when I break it as I am hard on equipment I will need to have a replacement handy... _________________ VR/
