I just buy 9" Gator spools...
It is a lot safer than hot oil, but harder to give away... and on the wallet. _________________ VR/

Hi Cliff,
This is a similar technique that I have used.
earlier in this thread I posted some pictures of the technique and results I used. The only noticeable odor came from the large pot of oil that I had on the stove (not the PVC); not to say that chemicals were not converted and released so I will make sure to wear my chemical mask next time. I was very cautious and always had my candy themometer at hand to check and adjust the temperature. (270 F)
I have had good results. and the winders are very very smooth and comfortable in the hand. After concerns posted about PVC breaking under pressure I was advised to try ABS instead of PVC. Since then I have obtained a 18" section of 6" diameter ABS and plan on making a couple of reels this weekend.
I also have a reel that isn't finished yet. It's 9" diameter and is made out of maple and has been turned on my father in-laws lathe. It's going to be very beautiful and will likely end up at a raffle...
Here is a quote from earlier in the thread:

cracked!!!
I think this is caused from the outside white coating not being the same as the inner core. I think the inner core is PVC and the outer core is something slightly harder. Very similar to pottery glazes not fitting the body of the clay, they crack.

A chemical compound of Acrylic, Butylene and Styrene, as opposed to PVC, polyvinyl chloride, which is the flimsier white stuff used for lawn sprinklers. ABS is the stuff black drain pipes for your house are made of that have replaced cast iron. Tough stuff and very cheap. Gator spools are also made from it.

Hard to find in large diameters. I'd think a plumbing supply store would be a better bet. Sizes that large are used for commercial and apartment buildings. Home Depot caters mostly to homeowners and residential handypersons.

Yes you can shape it in the same way, in the oil.
I haven't been able to find a cheap supply of 6" or 8" pipe. It can get fairly pricey at some places. I was lucky enough to walk into a plastic pipe shop that had 18" of 6" lying around from a previous job.
Good luck and share your results.
