Figured I'd revive this thread a bit. Anyone seen a Pfaff 138? It's the industrial form of the Pfaff 130. The big draw is that it has an 18 inch arm. I sewed on a friends once; it was really nice for big kites.

So with that in mind, what major feature do you drool over on a machine:

1. Long Arm,
2. Walking Foot,
3. Needle Feed,
4. Knee lift,
5. Really light (e.g. Featherweight),
6. Other (please specify)

What minor features do you look for:

1. Needle down,
2. "Bobbin Low" light
3. Stretch stitch,
4. Other (Please specify)

Discussions like this give me reason to go out and look (and try out) other machines.

What machine? Zig-zag?

The two things I'd like to try on a machine are a hand crank and a narrow presser foot with narrow dogs. Most machines use a typical "15" size foot, but in some cases a 3/4 size foot might be handier for tight work.
I keep meaning to lathe turn a wheel with a small knob for my machine.

I think it is a "single needle" machine (in industrial terms it is a straight stitch machine) made by Singer a long, long, long time ago, in a factory far, far away... The lady who gave it to me used to sew leather on it...

I will try to remember to look at it tonight to see what it is.

Ken, are you in the market for a new machine? I thought you loved your industrial Bernina machine (BTW what is the model number?)

The industrial I have and use is a Singer 20U-33. Zig Zag but no walking foot or servo motor system...

My Bernina 950 has served me very well. 9 years now! Once I figured out that it wouldn't tolerate bonded threads, I overcame the urge to throw it out the window. Wink

I'm looking for a 2nd machine that I can use for binding operations. I'm looking to expand the business and move into additional markets. Something like the Singer 20U would probably work well. I've been lusting after the Singer 457A. 5000 stitches/minute!

Any thoughts on Beech Mtn. / workshop?

Ken

Ken,

I think sometinig around here would work better as we could get more attendees, but that would require you to come to us.... What do you think???

I will look around for the Singer 457A and see what I can come up with...

I just saw one at an industrial machine store with a servo table.... LOOKS LIKE BIG $$$$$$$$$$$$

Have you contacted Joe Tricarico for your industrial sewing needs yet????

Tell him I sent you.

Service availabilty is imprtant. When you are in the midst of a project, repairs or adjustments will be much quicker if you bought the machine from a shop that also does repairs. I had my timing go out once on a relatively new machine, and it was fixed overnight for free. I even got a free bobbin and needle out of the deal.
A used or mail ordered machine might not have such a quick turnaround.
