Can you get some photos from your supplier of a machine in action.
I assume they slit down a whole roll 54" in one pass... It would be food for thought and nice to see. |
Here is a picture of ONE machine.... the fabric is not always slit in one pass, as it debends on the number of available cutting tools. When I get a 60" widh roll cut into 59 pieces, it requires more than one pass....

It looks EXPENSIVE $$$$$.
I am so glad they have such machines.
Now if you could only provide us with bias cut fabric in 1" width....but I guess it would be EXPENSIVE to make so I will just keep cutting here at home. _________________ VR/

Well Steve asked us to describe how we make edge binding that is thinner than what he can provide for us and here is my cheep version of what Steve posted:
End view
To make this I bought a piece of ½” by ½” aluminum angle stock at my local home improvement store.
I cut it in half on my table saw with a carbide tipped blade installed.
I put 3M’s 9460 on one inside surface and bonded the other piece to get the roughly Z shape.
I cut this in half again.
I flipped the pieces to get the shape you see above and then drilled holes and inserted 3 bolts.
I cut the ends again to get the whole mess kind of even on the ends. I sanded the ends to get them flat and burr free.
I pulled strips of crocus cloth thru the inside surfaces to radius the ends to give the fabric something smooth to ride on.
I loosened two bolts and inserted the blade at an angle to make sure the fabric stayed at the bottom of the device
Side view with blade in place
And here it is in use
lots of 1/2" strips in minuts, but it is warp oranted so it does not go arond tight curves well, but I can make a ton if it in minutes.
BTW wrap the fabric wiht a dryer sheet before placing under the weight or you will get enough static to zap yourself silly!!!!!!!!!! _________________ VR/

Hey, Kitesquid. I like your slitter tool. I especially like the photo that shows the weights you have on the Ripstop, and all around.
They look like soft leather bags filled with sand, or something. Maybe rice, or wheat.
I have been using plastic recycled yogart containers. I wash them out and fill them with rice. |

The weights are made from "mocisin" leather. it is soft and allows the bags to conform to surfaces.
I have aobut 12 that I bought. They are filled with steel shot and were marketed as paperweights.
I made about 6 myslef and they are filled with about 2.5 Lbs of lead shot each.
I like the lead ones better as they weigh more than the steel ones.
Lead shot is available in 25 lb bags at sporting good stores or gun shops that sell shot gun reloading supplies.
I just copied the ones I bought...
I layed a coffee can with the full bag of shot in it on the leather and cut around it with a scalpel blade (#11 hobby knife will work too, but sharp is imporant) and then stakced 2 up and sewed them but left an half inch or so opening to fill em wiht the lead.
Fill and sew shut.
write your name on em as they might disapeer at the next workshop you attend.
i like to use em to weigh my patterns down as I plop em down and the pattern does not shift.
LOTS of weight and my patterns dont shift!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I plan on makeing more as $ permit _________________ VR/
