I use a Fiskars retractable ...with either a quilting ruler or for my long cuts I use a metal yard stick...

I find that by starting the cut a bit before the fabric and going thru the end with a sharp blade and a very slight lean into the straight edge I usually am able to stay right along the line....

just my 2 cents worth.....(ok 1.25 cents)
