Of course one end is sewn into the seam of the sail. The other end, I flattened out into a "mushroom end" with a lighter, then mashed the molten glob flat. All this after the knot was made, but not tightened. After the flat part was made, I then brought it back into the sequence of the knot and tightened the whole thing up so that it only has one string coming out of it. The flattened end works great to deny the string any movement after the knot is tightened.
And yes, it is hollow dacron. 250 or 500lb I believe. Coming directly off of the spool, it is indeed flat, and makes it MUCH easier to tie the knot. Round line tends to get multiple twists in it when the knot is tied. The flat line is much easier to straighten out.

Of Course I know how to make a Monkey's fist....(squid will apprecate this) Way back on my first ship(1991) I was the guy that tossed the line over when ever we moored so I used to make my own monkey's fist for my heaving line.....
i still have my first monkey's fist I have tossed it to moor over 15 different countrys

I have tied the occasional Monkey's Fist a time or 3. I used to work at a local boat shop (West Marine). One of the other associates had one on his keychain and I had to figure out how to do it for myself. Very handy knot as Dennist3 can attest to. Perfect for throwing a weighted line, for a point to grab onto a line and pull, also makes a good lanyard end. _________________ Mark

ummmmm Weighted can be a very bad thing......
the XO's (exceutive officer....second in command of the ship) wife parked on the pier....(she wasn't supposed to be parked there while the ship was pulling in) any way....the called over all lines .....so I hauled back and threw my line over....it was a great toss right in the 10 ring (aka the center of the windshield of the XO's car) he watched the whole thing from the bridge .....Boy o boy was he P@#$$#ed at his wife for not listing to the people on the pier who told her to not park there....
..BTW 3 other Monkey's fists came with in 10 feet of the car....we all really didn't like the fact that she was so bossy just because she was "the XO's" wife
true story......
