what applications should I use .50 Vs. .75 Vs. 1.5 ounce Ripstop?
I'm shopping in the seconds section (still learning dont ya know)
and I see there are a ton of 1.5 oz seconds but all I have ever used is .75/.70...
Is 1.5 too heavy for a kite?
Can you mix weights in a kite?....or is this a no/no?
all inputs are welcome and apprecated!

LOL. One of my favorite topics. This is going to generate a few posts.
The numgers stand for how much the fabric weighs per square yard.
A close look at the fabric shows that half ounce is made by leaving out many of the larger Ripstop threads. It is great for ultra light and indoor kites.
3/4 ounce is the 'normal' kite fabric.

Here we go: It ain't the weight. 1.5 ounce is a lighter woven (weaker) fabric (fewer threads per inch) with twice as much coating.
It might be okay for kite bags, but that would be about it.
People often make the mistake of assuming that 1.5 ounce is stronger than .75 ounce because it is obviously stiffer and heavier.
People often use 1.5 ounce for reinforcements, pockets and sleeves. Then they are genuinely surprised when it fails so quickly and easily.
The closest thing to a favorable argument that can be made for using 1.5 ounce for reinforcements is that it is available in most of the same colors as Ripstop. Becuase it is stiffer, it is easier to work in to corners and such. But it must be remembered: It is weaker than 3/4 ounce. If strength is genuinely desired or required, make reinforcements and sleeves out of 3.5 ounce dacron.

Yup, it's done all the time. (see above) _________________ good heavens;

What?? Oh, I didn't know that. Thank you Gary for spelling that out.
I made the re-infocements on my mini Della Porta train from blue 1.5 because I though it was strong. Hmmm.
I went with Dacron on the Eddy Arch though (whew).
Again, thanks for that Gary!!
Cheers,

Take a piece of 3/4 and put it next to a piece of 1.5 and compare the weave of the fabric. You'll see what I mean.
Nancy Lockhart from Ohio was sewing sails before a lot of us were alive. If you want a treat, get her going on the, um, 'strengths' of 1.5 ounce.  _________________ good heavens;

Wow you are right Gary this will generate a lot of posts... I was told that 1.5 was weaker than .75 by someone at OKR this year... then when I was in a local sail loft they were saying that it was much stronger... O dear.. I don't know what to think...

Mr Gary, first of all thank you so much for all you have taught me so far...
how to pick out a sewing machine. (I love my old Singer 401a)
how to bridle a rok
and a load of other things
and today I should thank you for staying home from Ft Worden to teach us over the weekend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To have an experienced willing to share person such as your self has been a huge help to my kite building efforts.
Some day I may build something good enough to enter where you are judging!!!!
And now back to todays lesson on kite fabric
(sorry for the interuption) _________________ Randy

I agree with our very learned mr. gary using 1.5 for its strength is a false hood. I have mixed 3/4 oz with 1.5 oz to obtain certin colors needed also I have used white 1.5 oz rather than 3/4 oz because I wanted a white white grafic color . A typical 3/4 oz fabric washes out in the sun more so than 1.5 oz . |

ROFLMAO.
I want to be in the same room when you tell that to Nancy Lockhart.
I promise to stand way back, well away.
At our workshop in Cleveland, OH for OESEK this year, she was waxing eloquent on how a close friend of hers who ran a sail loft was reqiuired to do a bunch of repairs - on sails that used 1.5 ounce as reinforcement segments.
Nancy has been sewing professionally longer than I have been alive. When she talks, I listen.
My Mom used to have a great line: "A little powder, a little paint, she will look like what she ain't." That's 1.5 ounce in a nutshell.

Randy, you are way too kind!. Thanks for the kudos, but I am so envious of your artisitc ability. Your Roller turned me green with envy. I am a pretty good technician, but you guys who can make kites look so terrific leave me speechless. You are most welcome for anything you have found useful.

Wow. Cliff (CJQ) was judging kites at the national level before anybody knew I existed. Thank you sir! Cliff is one my kiting heroes, no exaggeration. He has been a big influence on kite judging, and has sponsored awards to recognize people who wouldn't otherwise be recognized. Thank you sir, for all your work behind the scenes.
Now, back to your regularly scheduled program . . .  _________________ good heavens;

Thank you Gary and Cliff and every one that has added in inputs on this....Squid will be soooo jelious when he gets back from FT.Worden that he missed out on this topic from the get go....
so in a nonstress use (like Applique) 1.5 is good if you are looking for a specific color not readily aviable in .75?
thanks again all!
