I read that some folks use a dremal to cut their spars. But which one?
diamond? fiber?

Randy, I'm not sure which one it was that I used - was brown and about an inch across. Had to go by the big orange box Sunday afternoon and got a few more - they were a little larger and were supposed to be reinforced....

The ones I use are disk 1.5" in diamater and are made of fiber reinforced abrasives and look like this:

They wear in use so they will get smaller..

For more info go to Dremel's Web Site

click the following:

accsories

rotary tool bits

cutting

nuber 456

Because of how they set up their web site I cannot provide you with a direct link. Sorry...

They are used with Mandrel #402...

There are other disks made by others that may be a better value...

The fiber disks work alright, but I bought a set of 6 diamond wheels from Harbor Freight for about $8, and they go thru Carbon spars like butter! I've cut, shaped, and modified probably 10 times as many rods as I ever did on 1 fiber wheel, and if I hadn't dropped the Dremel and bent the wheel Mad, it would still look nearly new. Razz And it still cuts rods like butter (just makes a wider cut now. Embarassed

I use the reinforced cutoff disks, too. I do not find them to be fragile at all. I found them in my local hobby shop. Pretty expensive there, though.

I would like to locate some that are 2 inch diameter with the 3/8 inch arbor hole.

I wonder what the cost of diamond wheels might be.

Five small, Dremel-sized wheels are $9.99 right here.
For other sizes, do a search for the keyword "diamond" from their main page.

Kiteguy, if I'd have known you were going to read this thread, I'd certainly have avoided providing any useful information! Shhh Razz
