What knots do you use in your kite building and flying?

Where do you use them?

I use several knots:

Prussic, to make adjustable tow points and linking points in a kite’s bridle lines

Larks Head, to attach flying line to a kite’s bridle and to lock a line on it’s spool (also called the “Reel Trick”)

Figure of Eight Loop, to put a loop in the end of a line to be able to Larks Head it.

Figure of Eight Knot, to put a stopper in the end of train lines so the larks head will not slip off the end

Butterfly knot, to attach line laundry, but now I usually use a small smooth gate carabineer

Cats Paw, to attach flying line to a carabineer on an anchor. Gary Engaval calls it the carabineer knot.

Double Sheet Bend, to make infantry adjustable bridle lines in prototype kites.

[Poor attempt at humor]Taughtline Hitch[/Poor attempt at humor] Tautline Hitch, to adjust bow lines and to lock down the bitter end of line left over from the Double Sheet Bend

Ligature Knot (also misnamed “Surgeon’s Knot”) to start and end sewn seams. It looks better than back tacking, but is a pain in the fingers to tie.

Bow knot, to tie my shoes.....

I use a pair of 5” or smaller locking hemostats (forcipes?) to tie knots in small line or to make sure that the knot is in the right place when tying bridles. I learned this from Paul LaMasters (RevFlyer) and it is a GREAT tip.

I am always looking for a more secure or easyer way to tie line. so please post a reply to this topic....

I'm using different kinds of knots that I learned over the year but I don't know what they are called of if they have a name. I should spend some time learning more about these.

I was eating dinner and missed all the dialogue on the knots. I hate it when I do that.

What a wonderful list of absolutely useful knots and hitches.

You boys already caught the 'Bow Knot' comment so here is one more to think about. It is "tautline hitch" not 'taught line hitch'. You should know the knot and not have to be 'taught' it. (BIG SMILEY Face goes here)
