Came across this. He talk specifically about Rev kites, but the idea can be applied any where. It's a neat idea. Would be good to use on trick kite wing tips too.

(yes, there really is a knot, but it's hidden)

I hope that all have recognized the work of our very own forum member, Woodpekr, aka Rich Durant.
Well done Rich.

Embarassed Shucks, thanks guys.

I've been thinking of changing it to make it a bit simpler. As you can see I drill a single hole in the cap where the end of the spar sits. I then pull the bungee through that hole.

I've been toying with the idea of drilling two holes, the second hole at the top of the triangular aperture at the top of the end cap.
Then, without making a loop, simply tie a knot in the bungee and thread it through the spar chamber as before.
Now you have the end cap with a single length of bungee coming out of the triangular aperture.
Then thread the bungee through what ever holes there are in the sail, thread it through the (new, second) hole in the top of the aperture (from the top), tie a knot, and trim it close. The knot will be visible, but it shouldn't be snagging your lines since it's tucked into the aperture.
This would make it easier to tighten a bungee if it stretches out, and for the weight conscious, uses half the bungee cord. My concern is that the second hole will weaken the cap.
So, when I get the time, I'll try this out and update my no knots page. If any of you try this let us know how it works out.

Rich,

It sounds like a good solution as long as you keep the holes centerd and as small as possiable.

KEEP THINKING and SHARING!!!!!!!!!

I love these forums!!!!!!!

I now have something to try on my next kite (possiably my MKS retreat kite or on-line della porta)

Doesn't ed shenk use heat to smooth the dacron sheath and adhesive to seal the two elastic ends together thereby making it truly "no knot" on his kites?

yes he does and swears he never had one break free..... but I have my doubts!

and woodpekr... that is a great modification to that fitting! Although, it looks like the fitting should be a little longer to accomodate the needed space for the knot. I forwarded this to the old man and he will surely have his own version of a longer machined end cap with the internal hole predrilled.

Maybe we will call it the "pecker fitting" Shocked

How about 'Pecker Cap'? Then you can have small, medium and large Pecker caps. Shocked Shocked

Since I use tubing, when you give the end cap a little push, the knot "pops" into the tubing and the tubing bottoms out into the end cap. I must admit that I didn't pull a couple of my knots tight enough so that they're too big for the tubing to slip past. I've never had a spar pop out. Although I hate to admit it, I do crash my kites on occasion Shocked I'll break a leading edge but the spars never pop out.

You guys can run a contest to name the endcaps, the more embarassing the better . . . Twisted Evil

Since the knot is inside of the cap, how about a "Naked Pecker Cap"?

This is to funny.

Steve,

I envision a steped hole where the spar goes. a deep small one for the knot and a larger one stepped out to accecpt the spar and to make sure that the spar does not contact the knot. so the spar cannot cut the knot after repeated assemblies of the kite...
