You can use Alcohol to speed the drying time or if you want salt techinques you substuet sugar for the salt and alcohol for the water. I prefer to use pure Ethanol as it is not a toxic as any denatured alcohol as they somtimes put Methanol in it, and nobody wants to breathe any large quanity of Methanol fumes as it can cause blindness and liver damage. But pure Ethanol is hard to find here in Virginia and is taxed a little higher too..... Shocked

You sound like you know what you are doing with safety, and I agreee that the paper masks are more for show than any real filtering. I would say they are good for nucance particles, like sawdust etc....

I really don't know as much as I probably should.

Part of what I do is collecting soil and groundwater samples to send off for chemical analysis for various (sonetimes) hazardous compounds. Fortunately for me I mostly deal with petroleum products (gasoline, diesels, fuel oils, kerosene) but they can be harmful enough.

We see potential for exposure to some potentially nasty stuff on a fairly regular basis - this the concern regarding respirators. Gloves and eye protection are another issue......

I just got my hands on a damaged spinnaker that has some white panels in it. Not sure how how large the white panels are - the parts I could see without unrolliong the whole thing seemed to be in goiod shape. I'll check if you think you might be able to use some of it.

Thanks Chuck! I am trying to do some Polyester right now, Is it poly?

I want to expeiment with fabrics that I know I can get more of.

I was thinking of the Toray Poly that Steve is going to be selling soon, but I don't know if there will be more after these boxes run out and I don't have enough $ to sink into 200 yards+ of fabric right now... just to make sure I have a good stock pile.

I LOVE Icarex PC because it's stiff hand and predictabilty in a finished kite. but at $12 per yard I cant buy much at a time.

I know there are other polyesters out there and some may take dye better than Icarex PC, but I have not done any testing on them yet...

I hooked into the Squid (and his bride javascript:emoticon(' Very Happy

')) this weekend and promised to acquire a dozen yards of half ounce White Icarex Polycarbonate for his tie dye efforts. I felt really honored too, because he stated that behind me Ken McNeil is waiting. Squid actually wants my rainbow and black Mojo though javascript:emoticon(' Crying or Very sad

')! It's the first Mojo ultra light and number 9 or 12 overall. He already has numbers 50 and 51.

I guess I'll just give him the kite and buy the fabric and hope I get a piece big enough for a Tirips or a new design Dave Ashworth and I are working on, currently called the OMNI. We're scheduled to teach a new quad design at the Maryland Kite Society's retreat in two weeks. We'd planned to teach the Omni but it looks like it will be Dave's Butterfly design instead, as our concept is not good enough for an engineer yet. (I'm a concept guy, so I struggle with the whole engineering mentality of my partners, but they do save my bacon too!)

Sir Kitesquid, I'll have to read the thread on difference btwn poly and nylon again and then go have a look at the spinnaker!

Where can I get some Icarex? I haven't seen it listed as such.

I'd like to buy some then forward you a batch for tie dyeing. Of course I'd pay for the dye and labor, and wait my turn in line.

I'm going to build a 6' Rok that I plan to auction off in support of the Jimmy Fund. Those forum members here in New England are probably familiar with the Jimmy Fund and the Pan Mass Challenge bike ride. My fundraising team goes by the name Team Tie Dye. I've ridden the 200 miles for 6 years now following my wife's brush with NHL. I plan to put a tie dye border aournd a white center, then applique the PMC logo in the middle.

Spinnakers generally haven't been made of polyester for years.
They aren't as durable as nylon.

This is Paul LaMasters holding the kite he built with the fabric I gave him.

That is his Grey Booth at work. I wish I could afford a grey booth.... or just the light bulbs from it.

The dyes were set in a microwave oven. Shocked

That will never be used for food again. SAFETY FIRST!!!!!!

The kite was made by Paul and is a light wind TIRIPS, a quad line kite.
