I'm planning on building a kite BAG. A BIG kite BAG.

You know how you get one thing and your whole design starts to revolve around that thing. Almost like a woman buying a burgandy sofa and then having to lay new carpet, paint the living room, change out all the blinds, etc. (Ladies - I say this in jest.) Wink Men do it too, but we won't admit to it. Rolling Eyes

Anyway, I have been thinking about the BAG and bought 4 20" zippers for the side pockets, and a 100" sleeping bag zipper for the main compartment. I've got some plans drawn up, and am trying to picture the sequence of events to put it together the easiest (and technically correct) way.

Which brings us (finally!) to the question: What fabric to use: 200 or 420 denier?

I've used 200 denier on banners and it seems like it would hold up, but my BAG is going to be 8'4" with a 3' circumference (about 12" deep).

OK - maybe my question got lost in the muck d'oh!

What's the difference between 200 and 420 denier?

And which would be the best for a big kite BAG?

it did. And i am working on a new feature to this forum that will allow you to keep a posting as "un-read" as long as you like.

I read things and tell myself that i will respond later, and then I forget.

So..... 200 vs 420. Denier is a measure of the thread that makes up the fabric, so the threads in the 420 are more than twice the size of the 200. In addition, the 420 that Kite Studio carries is coated on one side with a urethane - so it is more fray resistant and more water resistant than the 200.

If i was making a kite bag, a BIG kite bag, I would use the 420. There are also some corduras that are around 1000 denier if you want a really tough bag, but realize the cost of these fabrics are about double. Unless you can find some at a local rumage sale. Top Gun fabric would also make a very durable bag.

I can send samples if you'd like to compare them...

Nah. I'll go with the 420 when I get everything ready (although I have more color choices in the 200).

I'm thinking of a big YELLOW BAG, and I'd only need 3 yards to do it all - unless I want to make the pockets a different color... Like RED!

No one would dare walk off with a bag THAT visible.

the colors listed of 420 are only the ones I currently have in stock. I can order in another if you have a request. Although the 200 is available in WAY MORE colors....

I have seen some bags made of Sunbrella.... Expensive, but I think they found some seconds in a dumpster......

I wish I was that lucky!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The bags look like rolled up awnings, and are VERY diffrent!!!! I like em.
