My next MAJOR project is to start tie dying some Icarex PC and some 3/4 Oz nylon and have it available for kite builders. I don't know what the price woudl be yet and it would be avaiable sporatiactly when I decide o dye more.... it could be a labor of love fro me or a great way for me to trade kites or parts with people!!!!!!

I do have about 3 kite projects ahead of this and I also have to get the kite cave organized and the honey do list knocked down a little... too

BTW, Ken McNiel over at Blue Moon kites will have first choice of fabric if he wants some... for the kites he builds, for no apparent reason, other than the gift of one of his afternoons and I LOVE my Mojo SUL.

I don’t see myself using the fabric in my kites much other than just one to say I did, so most of the fabric I make will be avaiable to others.

No comments yet????

What would you use the fabric for? the entire kite or accents?

How wide and long would you be looking for????

Would you prefer 3/4 or 1.5 Oz Nylon????

Icarex PC or Toray type Polyester?

I have a Tye-dye AirFX that Dan Prentiss made for himself, and it's a great looking kite. He used the material for the center panel, and accents along the tips. It's on my website at my website if anybody is interested to look.

can you airbrush with this die? I mean could you make a sail with different colors and then put the graphic on nitros with some of this die stuff? I have a flower that needs some red spots... and a nother that needs an eye shaded...

I would be interested in some. I don't have a definate use for it but I always think it looks cool and would fine someplace to use it. Smile I don't have any preferance since I'm not sure what I would use it for.

I'd use the tie dye fabric for accents and as panels. Also want to use it for applique work to make up a logo.

I'm kinda hooked on tie dye. Five years ago while thinking up a way to pick out family members, friends, and supporters along the route of a popular 200 mile bike ride, I started making tie dye t-shirts - Team Tie Dye was born. The tie dye kites I make will be flown to help my cancer research fundraising efforts. If I can get enough fabirc, I'd like to build a Rok to auction off in support of the Pan Massachusetts Challenge and The Jimmy Fund

I want to make up a Tie Dye Rok using a white center panel with a 12-18" tie dye fabric border around the perimeter of the kite. I plan to applique the logo for the ride using tie dye fabric in the center. Follow-on plans include making a vented Tie Dye Ryv out of joined panels, orienting the panels to enhance strength. I'll probably use a combo of white and tie dye panels.

I'm fairly new to building so I'm not sure of the advantages or disadvantage between 3/4 oz Icarex PC and the Toray. My only projects to date have used the 1/2 oz Toray rainbow polyester. I liked the weight, but I'm not sure yet how it will stand up.

I guess I'm a closet hippy , I like the look , Bags , sleeves , kites , flags and what ever would look good .

The cost would be the deciding factor in it's uses !

I don't know how big of a pice, but I did dye the Iris Edo kite.... I guess I could do a 20 yard piece of fabric or larger. It mosty depends on how hard it is to tye and how much i can throw around the table when the dyes are being applyed. The steamer can be made any size as long as I have a decent supply of heat to make steam. I am looking at those turkey fryers as a heat source.

Look HERE to see a large piece of tie dye sewn together. I saw one of them in Alburquerque over Christmas.

Steve, why do you ask about the size of fabric???????

If any of you try to dye fabric at home read and understand the MSDS for all the chemicals you plan to use!!!!!!

I use a resperator, disposable gloves, chemical goggles, etc when I am using the dyes and auxilaries...

Taking a hard left turn here...

Harold, you said you're using a particle mask when you dye materials - is that a simple paper mask from the Big Orange Box or an actual respirator? If you're using a respirator, check your MSDS a little closer and make sure you are using the right filters for the chemicals you're using. Particulate filters are fine for particulates but if its fumes and vapors from the chemicals you're working with the particilate filters may not be giving you the protection you're looking for.

gotta agree with squid on safety. And i am very guilty of not following reccomendations. The past two weeks I've been breathing a combination of fumes from Spray Glue, Design Master Paint, and Thinner..... this morning I woke up with a nose bleed and sore throat..... very nasty stuff. Sad

Always use in a well ventilated area, with proper protection...
Do as I say, not as I do.

The dyes are most dangerous when in the powder form, and I am using a dual filter respirator as I don’t want to breathe the dust. I also do this outside on a piece of wetted down newsprint that I throw away as soon as I am done with the powders. I don’t want it to dry and the powders to become airborne.

The fumes are not a big deal as the only thing coming out of the steamer is water vapor and a little citric acid or acetic acid (the stuff in vinegar) and I am up wind, and outside when steaming the fabrics.

When applying the dyes they are suspended in water or alcohol or a combination of the two, depending on the evaporation rate desired and the fabric and/or dying technique I am using. The problem here is only with ingestion, so I TRY real hard to keep my big mouth shut during this process and I wear disposable gloves and chemical goggles (not safety goggles).

I try to be safe and think of the safety of those present when working with anything that can harm them, as I love my wife very much and I don't want to hurt her.

Go to Dharma Trading and read the shop safety section, for the basics!!!! But read and understand the MSDS before purchasing any of the chemicals to see if you are comfortable with and understand all the safety requirements of working with them. Call the manufacturer if you have ANY questions as they want you to have a safe experance with their products!!!!!!

The dyes are just mixed with water and acetic acid? No solvents or alcohols?

BTW folks - sounds like Squid is using a real respirator in this case. Be aware that those little paper masks you see people using sometimes when they paint, are sanding or are cutting the grass, are in reality just about useless except for very large particulates (sawdust, sand, some pollens). There's no proper filt to the face. About all they really keep out is what bounces off of them....

Combo filter was probably a good idea - just in case...
