Long Island City, NY. Sunday, October 26, 2003 11:00 AM - 3:00 PM – Socrates Sculpture Park and the Isamu Noguchi Garden Museum are proud to present a very special workshop for children at Socrates Sculpture Park with sculptor and master kite maker, Tsutomu Hiroi. Mr. Hiroi will present a short video of his kites and sculpture, then lead participants in a hands-on workshop where they will learn about the history of kites and the art of kite making, then build and decorate their own kites using traditional Japanese methods and materials such as bamboo and handmade paper. Children can then fly their completed kites in the Park, a spectacular riverside site, overlooking the Manhattan skyline. Participation in the workshop is free and supplies will be provided, but space is limited and advance registration is required. Parents can register their children (ages 5 - 11) for either the 11am or 1pm session by calling Alyssa Plummer at the Isamu Noguchi Garden Museum, 718-204-7088, x 208, before October 23. The workshops last approximately 2 hours and will be held - rain or shine - under a tent in the education area at Socrates Sculpture Park. Tsutomu Hiroi has been making kites since 1935 and has lectured on kite making all over the world. He is a respected artist, best known for sculptures
using concrete, wood and metal, and has collaborated with Isamu Noguchi on several projects including the Monument to Buddha and Noguchi’s Akari light sculptures. He is currently a professor emeritus of Tokyo Gakugei University in Japan and has taught sculpture, design and kite making in the United States at the University of Denver, California College of Arts and Crafts, and Ohio State University.

For directions to the Park, please visit their website: www.socratessculpturepark.org. For additional information about the kite making workshop, please contact Lisa Gold at Socrates Sculpture Park, 718.956.1819, or Amy Hau at Noguchi Museum, 718.204.7088, or e-mail info@socratessculpturepark.org. This program is funded, in part, by a grant from ConEdison.
