I was wondering if a knot in a Kite Line weaken the line strenth?
For example, if I want to put a loop in the line to attach laundry, does this weaken the line strenth?
Or, if I want to attach two lines together, is there a bette knot to attach them and keep, let say the 300lb tension force?

Here is a link to Gary Engval's kite knot page
I recomend using the Butterfly Loop to add loops to the line, or to just bend on some carabiners to the line asyou can move them up and down the line easly.
If you use carabiners, look for ones with smooth gates!!!!!! protect your line. Just put about 7 turns thru a caribiner and the tension on the line from the kite will keep it in place. slack the line and the caribiner moves with ease. This works well with such things as Gomberg's Streamer Flags. He also shows how to attach caribiners to line, but if you look at the one in hte photo, you will see a pin in the gate that MAY grab your line. Buy smooth caribiners!!!!!!!!
most other knots weaken the line too much...
To splice a line, if you are using hollow core braided line, you should splice them internaly. Think of a pair of "chineese finger cuffs"
Otherwise use a Double Fisherman's Knot or a Barrell knot.
Look for knots that do not weaken the linea and that will work well with any pull down device or anchor you are using.
I try not to splice lines together, due to the many rokkaku battles I have been in. it is a place for your foe to stop his line aginst and cut your line. Look at all those kids with $2 kites on cotton line as foes!!!!!!!!!
When a line of mine is old, I throw it away. If a line gets cut in a rokkaku battle, I use it for Bridle Line, or to replace my shoe strings, or for some facny work.
I hope that helps. _________________ VR/

If you have a knot book handy, I use a tied loop with a Kleimheist (SP) or Prussik knot, then tie the laundry to the loop. These allow easy repositioning of the loop without weakening the line. A handful of these loops hang on my line bag's handles and cost almost nothing.

When I trided using Prusic knots, they would not stay in place. I guss It was a combination of hte line I was flying on and the line I used to make the loops out of to make the prusic knots with.
If I Remember Correctly, they were both braided Nylon of the same size.
I was flying a 252 at the time. _________________ VR/

Kliemheist knots resist slippage better for me, but materials are always a variable. I don't fly any giant stuff, or biners would be a must for safety.

I HATE most hardware but Caribiners and swives are sometimes a nessasary evil...
BTW I could not find Kliemheist knot in Ashley Book of Knots.
I tried a diffrent spelling and I found the Klemheist Knot here. But you will have to endure a ton of popups as it is at tripod dot com. _________________ VR/

That's it.
You'd think Steve would have that knot in the forum spellcheck!

All knots, hitches, or loops weaken the strength of the line to some extent by their very nature. But, some knots weaken the line a lot less than others. Also, the remaining strength of the line is only half the story. The other half of the story would be: How easy is the knot, hitch, or loop, to tie when needed, and, even more important, how easy is it to UNTIE when done. Leaving loops tied in the flying line will accumulate abrasions and dirt and further weaken the line.
Kleimheist Hitches and Prussik Loops work well for LIGHT pulling laundry in light wind. They can slide if the wind increases and may foul other laundry, or slide up far enough to foul the airstream to the kite.

Yes, it will weaken the line, but this can be mitigated by choosing the right one.
An Overhand Loop weakens the line 50% and is almost impossible to remove.
A Butterfly Loop is virtually a 100% loop (line retains nearly 100% of its original strength) and is incredibly easy to remove after use. It is my favorite Loop for laundry of all types.

The ideal way to join two lines is to use a Splice instead of a knot. However, some lines are braided so tightly that splicing is not possible.
The ideal knot for joining two lines, even Spectra (or any other Allied Fiber polyethylene) Line is a Barrel Knot (otherwise euphemistically known as a Grapevine, Double Overhand, Double Fisherman's Bend)
Here is a link to an animated description of how to tie the Barrel Knot (Double Fisherman's Bend).
I've heard it called a 'True Lover's Knot' as well. The trouble is, I like Des Pawson's True Lover's much better, as a knot, even though it isn't good for much of anything except decoration.
Oh, by the way, to anchor the monster Peter Lynn Show Kites that fly on 2200 pound line, I usually pass the flying line thru the anchor(s) as a bend (doubled), and then tie a bowline with the doubled line. That way any weakening of the line by the knot is compensated for by the doubled strength of the line.
Hope that helps. _________________ good heavens;
