Hi All,
I finally finished the kite display in the youth section of the local library, to celebrate National Kite Month. I will probaly be adding to it each time I go with my son. I am also going to borrow a few of the kites back for the April 10th festival in Cincinnati It was hard to get good photos but you will have to take my word that it looks much nicer in person The staff was very enthusiastic while I was setting up and it is a treat to see the faces of the children when they see the kites
This is the display case as you come in, ( plus my helper ) The delta is the kite I have had for the longest time. It is at least 25 years old. I have very fond memories of flying it when I was young. The Native American, paisley and blue, (at the bottom left of the case, that you can barely see,) fighters I got from Stan. ( Thanks! ) The neon kites at the bottom are one piece deltas I made. The center shelf has a bunch of miniature kites, some pins and kite books throughout the display. The paper on the glass door lists events in the area for the months of March and April. There is also a sheet of paper on the bottom shelf with kite safety guidelines. I plan on adding a sheet promoting the local club and a sheet with AKA info.
This is looking to the back of the room. The tiger on the left is a store bought, centipede style kite. It needs a pretty steady breeze but looks really cool when it flies, ( the feet just hang down and look like they are running when it is flying )
This is looking from the back, toward the entrance. To the left, against the window, I have a "Sea Kite" area with SmoochyPus, a Joel Sholz fish I won at MAKR, shark stunt kite, a delta with a snorkeler on it and a ship kite right behind the brick post To the right you can just make out a Robert Brasington fan ( the tails are hanging into the second photo )
This is the second display case. It has two black/white tyvek kites ( to make Ronda happy ) Sodas the kids and I made at Kites On Ice, ( Thanks Paul ) some small Eddys and books.
I asked, and the librarians were nice enough to find all of the kite related books in the youth section and display them all on one table. It was a lot of fun to get to display and share my kites. If anyone else is doing anything for National Kite Month, share it with us
Below is a list so you can see how many of the kites you can find in the photos

-Delta Coyne with tube tails (Merrit Beck)
- RWB Sailing Ship (won at the area 6 welcome party at the Dayton)

Hey Grant well done , nice to see someone promoting kites ,especialy in a public place like a library. BTW , Bernie asked about the D.S. being missing and thought that KITE GUY may have slipped it into his car trunk.Maybe just maybe he's going to use it as a patern and finaly make a Double Star. Think so ?????

Believe me, I would love to showe off the DS I measured and there was nowhere I could hang the DS without it being in the way They have a round sectional where they have several computers but even if I put it above that, it would still whack everyone in the head when they sat down. I had thought of hanging it outside, in the main part of the library, ( it has a higher ceiling,) but it would be a production to hang it, ( and I want to be able to get it down for the April 10th, Cincinnati festival ) Maybe after the festival, I can hang it there for the rest of the month. |

Very cool Grant! I'm inspired, maybe I should do something similar at our library. I don't have your big and varied collection of kites though...

That's a good idea. Grant, maybe you could make a one page handout on making a sled with a trash bag. _________________

Go for it. Just put up what you can. I found that the librarians are very receptive. The ones at our library approached me to see if I was going to do the display again this year. They were ready for me to put it up in February, ( they said that they really enjoy having all of the color in the room )

The library has a lot of smaller children and the craft table is sort of an unsupervised make-and-take type craft. Last year I had a simple sled type kite that you make out of a square sheet of paper. The kids can color the paper, their parents help them fold along the two lines printed on the back, attach the thread at the two marked points, attach a tail and they are ready to go. I will probably make a step by step display on a poster board to hang on the wall above the table. I make up a bunch of bridle lines in a slit piece of cardvoard and a bunch of tails from surveyor tape. ( I found the kite! It is on the National Kite Month web page but their link is wrong. I had to Google it to find the right link HERE is the good link. Can't get much simpler than this and they don't fly too bad either ) |

Thanks Dave,
That is the one I am talking about. If you had only posted a few minutes earlier, it would have saved me a search |
