Another fabric dying effect which I think is both dramatic and visually effective is layering. Put down a background in muted colors, and set it (steam or heat set). Then put down your main theme and set it. The combination of themes can be magnificent. For example, a scarf in which the background was a muted and simple celtic knot. The foreground was several beautiful serpentine dragons. The knotwork ended up going through, around and framing the dragons.
This effect allows you to perfectly mix themes. For instance you could do a muted portrait of the late Columbia crew, and then in the forground have a pic of the Columbia taking off. or a muted imge of Wilbur and Orville Wright and a foreground of their plane flying. You could do a smiling, woman's face superimposed on a background of leaves (i.e. Mother Nature), or put down a Yin/Yang in the background 2 dragons fighting in the foreground. Because the first image is set before the second one is applied, it does not affect or get affected by the 2nd image, and they remain independant and truly superimpose.
This is an effect which cannot be duplicated with applique (or if it can, I have no idea how).

I have thought about that process myself.
Another thing I like about it is if you mess up and want to remove a boo boo, you dont loose all your work..... _________________ VR/
