No Problem.................

Sounds good to me!!!!!! Provide photos please.
ChaoticGemini wrote: | Just two more questions, if you don't mind...Will the fabric need to be prep-ed first? |
It depends on if you care... for my silk painting techniques I did wash the fabric TWICE using Synthrapol and Rinced twice after the last wash , just to make sure any oils and soaps were out of the fabric before dyeing as they will repell the dyes.
ChaoticGemini wrote: | I know I've used soda ash with this type of process before. |
Soda Ash (Sodium Carbonate) is used for MX family of dyes when dying on cotton. Soda Ash is NOT reqired for Acid dyes or Dispurse dyes!!!!!!
ChaoticGemini wrote: | Where would I look for Denatured Alcohol? |
Like Randy said, look at the pait store or you can also find it at any hardware store or the hardware department of a discount departhment store (WallMart etc) Denatured Alcohol has a lot of varrainances in it, so I would recomend that you find a brand that works and stick to it....... diffrent additives to "denature" it....
You may also try NOT using the Alcohol.... it might work.... it depends on the fabric's coatings and also the water you use could effect it... Well, City, how hard or soft, if you use a water softner, I would recomend you get your water from the garden hose as it should be tapped off before the softner. No salt added.......

That is why I am here.
Also I rememberd something.... use non-reactive pots and tools, i.e. Stainless Steel or Enamled steel. do not use aluminum as the oxides may shift the chemestry......
Also re read my Safety notes in a previous post!!!!!!!!!! _________________ VR/

I have an array of "kitchen" things for other nasty chemicles that I had planned to use. They are all stainless steel with red duct tape on the outside. The red duct tapes is so my husband (my home's cook) doesn't decide to use them for anything.
Again, thanks for all of your imput. I will be sure to take pictures of whatever results I get. Right now, I need to finalize my designs.

Sorry, I haven't looked. I've been busy trying to get my ideas on paper.
As I mentioned, I'd like one to be a knot design. I did something with Sharpies for a local kite club project. (There's a picture HERE) What I want to do is much more complicated, though, and I certainly do not want a blue sail. For the design in my head, I imagine the knots in white with black boarders and one accent color with a colored background. Does that make sense? When I get my design finalized on paper first I can post it. Due to other things that have just happened in the past couple of days, though, it may be a bit before I get the time to devote to this project. I will keep you posted though. |

Good looking stuff there!!!!!
I will have to think for a while hoe to make the THIN black lines but what comes to mind first is to use thickend dyes..
But you will have to worry about dyes running...
You can use Gutta or synthetic gutta, but it may not stay on the fabric... you may want to call Dharma and ask about a guta for nylon that can stand up to steaming, then the problem would be solved!!!!!!!! _________________ VR/

One more comment...... just a little thing but sense your kite is backlit...
you should work around the reinforcemnts and spars if you can with your art as they will change when you back light them........
Just a thought, that I dont always listen to myself... but your art has so many fine lines in it.
BTW have you tried Copic markers on Ripstop yet?????? EXPENIVE but great if you are not painting an entire kite.
And what did you use to put this art on this kite??? _________________ VR/

My wife found a way to get the Batik "mottled" effect with resist on silk ( It may not work on Ripstop). Place one layer of dye down and let it dry a bit (it does not have to be uniform). Then put a second layer, of a slightly different color or saturation down in an uneven, random application. The second dye carrier (water or alcohol) will pick up the first dye and push it away from the brushstroke. Where the first dye is trapped between 2 brushstrokes, it will concentrate in a random pattern much like the crackly appearance of many batik works. It doesn't work for the small detail oriented areas, but works well on large areas of color.
Some silk/cotton painting techniques do not transfer well to Ripstop, but it might be worth a try using Squidcolor.
