To go with the thread thread, I've noticed that the needles I get here in the Frozen Hinterland are sized with numbers like 10, 11, 13, 14, but you Americano types use numbers like 90, 110, 120...

Is there a direct conversion for these??

Thanks,
P.

I beleive that the 80, 90,100,110 is european sizing; please correct me if I am wrong, and the 12, 14, 16, 18 is American sizing. Most needles I buy have both sizes listed...

is the lower number (12,16,etc) 64ths of an inch?

Hmmm, there's a few good tips in that PDF.

TEST FOR RIGHT SIZE NEEDLE:
Cut a piece of thread about 12 inches long and thread it through the needle. Hold the thread vertical and fairly taut. Then, from the top, spin the needle. It should slip down the thread. If it doesn t, you need a larger needle.

Needles range is size from very fine 60\8 to a heavy duty needle 120/19. Most needles use the two number measuring system. The higher number relates to the metric system used in foreign counties. It defines the needle shaft diameter in fractions of a millimeter. The lower number relates to the system in the U.S and is used to indicate needle shaft diameter.

The needle sizing is Metric/Singer.

The first number is the metric needle size (i.e. 70) and represents the diamater of the hole the needle will make in 2 x 10 to the negative fifth, or 0.00001 Meters.... so a size 70 needle will make a hole that is 0.00007 meters or 0.070 Centimeters in diamater.

The second number is the Singer number system. This number can be converted to thousaths of an inch by taking the Singer number and multiplying times 2 and then adding 8.

A size 10 Singer needle then will make approximately a size .028 inch hole in the fabric or in metric it will make approximately a .070 Centimeter hole. Therefore the size 70/10.

A size 12 Singer needle then will make approximately a size .032 inch hole in the fabric or in metric it will make approximately a .080 Centimeter hole. Therefore the size 80/12.

A size 14 Singer needle then will make approximately a size .036 inch hole in the fabric or in metric it will make approximately a .090 Centimeter hole. Therefore the size 90/14.

A size 16 Singer needle then will make approximately a size .040 inch hole in the fabric or in metric it will make approximately a .100 Centimeter hole. Therefore the size 100/16.

A size 18 Singer needle then will make approximately a size .040 inch hole in the fabric or in metric it will make approximately a .110 Centimeter hole. Therefore the size 110/18.

How is that for a math lesson????????????
