I'm looking for a sewing machine. As I was looking for a list of features off the Internet, one feature says: twin-needle sewing capability. Does this mean that it can sew with two needles side-by-side? _________________ Smarties

Smarties - That simply means the machine has 2 spindles on the top, to hold 2 spools of thread. But they usually only have 1 bobbin. If you use one on the special "double needles" , and set the machine in the "straight stitch" mode, each needle will sew a straight line on the top, and the single bobbin thread will loop thru both of them on the backside of the sail.
So what you get is 2 parallel lines on top, and a sort of zig-zag on the botton.
I'll find a link to a picture of one of the needles and post it in a minute.
I wish the picture was bigger, but I think you can see it fairly well. The single post at the top goes where a normal needle goes, but there are 2 needles at the bottom. Put a separate thread in each one and Voila`! |

While at Ft Worden I was going from one workstation to the next checking out all the good work. I noticed that one woman had done her applique (a Celtic design) using what I thought had been a twin needle. The parallell rows of stitches were evenly spaced all around the design. I asked her if it was hard to use the twin needle, but she told me she just made two passes around the design with a single needle. Her machine did not do zigzag stitches. I was properly amazed. _________________

I've been told that one problem with using a double needle on kites is that the backside of the stitching is particularly vulnerable to snagging and having the stitches fall apart--due to the fact that a single thread goes back and forth. I have not verified this myself. Another research project for someone! |
