Back and drying out Spikey, ( the only thing I got out this weekend ) The kids and I went down to the ice early Sat and there was already lots of standing water and the forecast was for a high above 50 degrees F We put Spikey out anyways. Trying to get the gecko to fly in those conditions didn't seem like fun, ( especially not with two small children moaning about cold, wet feet.) As we did stuff inside, I would peek out the window and Spikey was almost always at least half inflated but looking pretty sad sitting in all that water.
We did some of the indoor workshops and the kids each have a new "Magic Carpet" kite thanks to Debbie and Joe Von Bokern. We also each have neat, small Kimono kites we made in Paul Fieber's workshop. The indoor performace was pretty spectacular with all types of different performers along with the kitefliers. We made the best of it and I plan on going again next year, ( but I will check the forecast before deciding on wether or not to take the kids ) Here are a couple of photos. Grant

Wow, what a weekend, wet and more wet. All my gear is soaked, even the stuff we didn't try to fly. Pretty bad when you wear your snow pants to try to stay dry, not because it's cold. It may take a week for my boots to finally dry.
Just spent the last hour laying everything out. The cats were very helpful as I was unspooling line. Did you know, wet line shrinks as it dries, and will split your reels, even those marked "unbreakable".
The parasleds were so wet, and last night it got so cold, that I have to let them warm up a bit before I try again to unroll, they are actually frozen and stuck together!
Grant, you probably saw my daughter in Charlie's classroom, she was his assistant, or as we say, Angel in Training. Smart kid, figured out the best place to hang out, dry, a supply of cookies, and lots of people to talk to, what else could a teenager need, oh and no mom to bug her!
Oh well, a good time was had, hope they do it again next year!

Hi Prog,
There was so much going on throughout the performance. There was a stilt walkers, ( in a tutu,) airielists hanging from long bundles of flowing cloth, dancers, video, music... In the photo there is a bit of everything going on. The scimatar shaped things that some of the performers are holding are like long skinny edy kites with arched spines. They did different interesting visual things with them through out the show. At this point, they are slowly rotating their arms, accentuated by the kites. there are also several long silver streamers tied to the end of long poles being waved around. You can also see two silver deltas, ( rounded noses and fairly flat loose sails,) being flown around the stage at the end of short lines attached to poles. One right above and to the left of the girl on stilts heading toward the audience and the other is right of her heading toward the screen. Imagine all of this to music with video and light effects. Very cool.
One of the neat things they did with the skinny edy kite props was done while there was an animated film, ( somewhat abstract,) playing on the screen at the back of the stage. The animation was of waving grass on a savanah and also a leopard. The perfomers were side by side, and at times in a clump, manipulating the edy kites to mimic the grass like motion of the animation in the background. There was also a segment where the animation loop was of a crane taking off and flying which was mimiced by white kites being flow from poles. A very enjoyable experiance |

Thanks Grant!
That sounds very cool. I'd like to see it myself.

I absolutely LOVE Scott Skinner's Big Bee Kite. On each of the triangle pieces of fabric are two skinny reflective pieces of fabric sewn at opposite angles. When the kite is hit with a bright light, such as a strobe light, you see hundreds of 'EYES' looking back at you. It is wonderful.
The best part is when Scott wears his bee wings.
gotta go,
