Is your needle a little bent/misaligned? if so you can hit the bobbin assembly as you go down (similar symptoms to a timing problem). I had that problem once. Very dangerous. Everything was bound up and I thought the problem was bound up fabric and a tension problem. Got everything so it both looked and moved correctly, started again and the needle hit the bobbin assembly, snapped, flew up and hit me just below my lower eyelid and drew blood. Half inch higher and it would have hit me square in the eye. Scared hell out of me.
When I took the remains of the needle out, I found that it was slightly bent away from me. Apparently when I moved the wheel by hand it would just miss the bobbin assembly, but under power it was pulled a little farther back and could hit the bobbin; at speed it did hit the bobbin. Almost made me start sewing with safety glasses.

Chris.
That is good news!!!!!!! I shows you that you made a wise decission in buying from a shop that knows the value of customer service.
You should buy some scissors or needles there soon...
Maybe send a thank you card....
But bad news for me as I could use another machine in the KiteCavren.. _________________ VR/

Yeah, I may buy that straight stitch plate and foot. Along with some needles and another bobbin case that I can set for stitching webbing and other misc. materials. That way I can leave the one they're going to set for Ripstop and never mess with the tensions again.
My main thing is never letting it happen again. Should I straight stitch the binding from here on out on the kite? I've already done 50 panels in a std zig zag. _________________ Chris Taylor

Did they say why it skipped timing????
Loose belt tension could be the problem.
I would contune sewing the way you were going....
Just make sure you are using a Jeans needle (the sharpest ones I know of) _________________ VR/

I too am very curious as to why it got out of timing. Is the belt loose? Is the cog worn? How could it get out of timing, and how likely is it to do it again? You said that it was always a bit questionable from the time you bought it. How do you mean that?

Got the machine back and tried it out last night. Sews good and no more weird feeling like before. BUT, now whtn the needle stops in the up position the point of the needle is near the presser foot when it is raised. I thought the needle was maybe not all the way in. Nope, it was fine. The needle threader hits the presser foot so I can't use that anymore. But, other than that. It sews wonderful. I think I'm gonna take it back to get that lil bug worked out. I was reading through the repair manual and just don't feel like tampering with it since I didn't do the damage this time. The repair person wasn't in when I picked it up so I couldn't get any answers as to why it jumped timing. I'm guessing a loose belt. So anyhow, I'm still without a machine for the time being... _________________ Chris Taylor

A loose belt is an accident waiting to happen, and should be covered by the original warantee (as should a worn or displaced cog). As I said before, if a needle hits the bobbin case at high speeds, the shrapnel can go anywhere (in my case just below the eye). Don't let the sewing place off the hook till the machine sews as it should.
