I wanted to pass on the following message from Roger Chewning, who puts on the annual Wildwood Kite Festival:

Wildwood is heading into its 20th year. The Rio Motel will be torn down, and construction will begin in the fall of 2005 for a new skyscraper. Perhaps they could tear down the old one on Memorial Day weekend. I will ask, maybe a half time kind of entertainment. We received notice of our funding for this year this past week. The event is on. In January we will announce a new headquarters hotel. There will be some additional options on the hotel list. As the HQ hotel will move a little further from the site, we will move more of our operations to the convention center. I have meetings in WW this January to lay out the
schedule and adjust the plans for Friday, etc. In the past the event has used the Rio as a Friday night center for registration and SJKF has hosted a Friday night banquet. We will change that to the convention center most likely. I will be alerting all the clubs as the plans develop. There just has not been any news to report from our end.

Roger Chewning

Thanks for the update, Roger. During the winter, it's nice to think about warm beaches. We'll look forward to further news when you get it.Now, back to work on that kite I was making... Wink

I am currently working on a DVD slide show / movie as a tribute to the Rio Motel. I've asked Roger to show this at the banquet in Wildwood this year. I am looking for photos or video with the Rio in them. If you have any and want to contribute them to this project you can email them to me or post them here. If you have hard copies or video please email me for my snail mail address. I will return all hard copies or videos to the sender as soon as they are scanned or copied. Thanks for any help you can give to this project.
