I'm signed up for my first (go there) workshop.
I'm doing the John Freeman, twisted log cabin design, class next month in Longbeach, WA.
Any suggestions for must not forget tools, other than the usual (machine, table, chair, thread, scissor, roller cutter, mat, ext cord, m&m's ).
I tend to over do and take too much but I don't want to leave out the essentials either. My DH is good a packing everything in but he won't like it if we have to bring the utility trailer 'cause I over pack .
Thanks!

For the museum classes I recommend that you bring a portable light of some sort. The Gymnasium where the classes are held has no windows and has okay lighting for basketball but not great for close up work. I prefer the folding Ott light because it fits in my travel sewing case, but they are expensive. _________________ Robkite

The H is Husband/Hubbie as you guessed, The D is very flexible as to the situation (darling, dear, darn, etc., but dynamic works in this case).
Thanks Progcraft for the link. I'll have to look later as I am on a short break right now.
Thanks Robkite for the light suggestion. I did not even think of that, and I visited the class last year so I know what you mean about the lighting. _________________ We do not cease to play because we grow old,

You definitely need a light and an extension cord. And, of course, a good cutting board, measurind devices, and roller cutters with sharp blades. Does not hurt to have a pillow for the chair seat and/or a back rest as there is a lot of sitting involved. We have a pot-luck dinner on Sat., so plan for that. Oh, and don't forget the big insulated coffee cup. There is a microwave available in the kitchen and usually someone brings a coffee pot and stuff to nosh on during class. Also, check out the local bakery for breakfast and for wonderful munchies.
But don't worry too much about thinking of everything. Most of us bring lots of extra stuff to the workshop and we tend to share things. One year John and Marzlie even had to loan us their extra sewing machine as ours decided to die about 1/2 way through! |

A couple of items I either didn't notice or didn't see in the above or past posts that might be helpful:
a spare bulb for your sewing machine
(maybe) a spare bulb for your desk lamp
sewing machine tools (screwdriver)
other feet (zipper, hemming, etc.)
thread stand
hot cutter/soldering iron (I know hot tacker was mentioned...) _________________ Spence

Most of what is mentioned here is covered in the thread that Progcraft pointed us to.
I have a tough time following 2 parallel threads... I appologize for my stupidity... I am sorry... _________________ VR/

The late afternoon sun was brutal so the picture isn't the greatest but here is the finished skin. I had to work Monday so did not get to finish. Need to finish the pockets for the spars, bridle it and make a fuzzytail. Should be able to finish it this weekend. Oh, and a bag, need to remember the bag. I think I'll make it out of the left overs from all those strips.

Here's what I learned:
- Don't try to cram a 3 day class into 2 days
- Take breaks or I won't be able to move later.
- Mark your stuff so you can find it when you leave it on a cutting table
- Take lots of pictures so I can make another later
- New rotary blades are verrrrry sharp! (ouch)
- Pay attention to the fingers when clipping threads. (ouch again)
- All that cutting and sewing IS worth it. With kites, the end does justify the means
- John Freeman is an awesome instructor and a nice guy _________________ We do not cease to play because we grow old,
