G'day all
I have a question about cutting strips for use as edge binding from 1.5 oz Ripstop fabric.
I've always been hot cutting when I do this. It's a real pain in the a** Do I have to hot cut the 1.5 oz Ripstop? Or can I get away with just knife cutting the strips? I'm not sure how much fraying may happen if I knife cut it and I'm not all that willing to find out on my own (if you know what I mean)
Thanks
Cheers,

I think that when you get a roll of the Ripstop edging it has been knife cut from a bigger roll.
I always knife cut mine. For what ever that is worth. _________________

If you double fold the edge binding the cut edges are buried and not exposed to the wind. I do this on banners and whenever I use .75 oz for edge binding. With the buried edges there's no way this will fray if the edges are cold cut. I also cold cut the edge of the banner since it's buried inside the binding. For kites you have to consider the thickness and the weight, .75 oz double folded would be equivlent to using 1.5 oz binding and using 1.5 oz would be equivlent to using 3.0 oz binding. |

1.5 ounce will fray when cold cut. This also has to be considered when doing applique with 1.5 oz nylon. So, if you will have the edges of your strips exposed, i would probably hot cut.
The rolls of 1.5 oz x 1" @ Kite Studio are all hot cut.

Steve, what about 3/4 oz. Will this fray also if cold cut? Just an information question as I buy mine from you and it looks to be hot cut. _________________ John M |

Most of our .75 x 1" slit Ripstop is hot cut. Will it fray when cold cut? Well, i think it is better to say it will fray less when hot cut. So if fray could or would be an issue and hot cutting is an option, I always hot cut.
All the Ripstop we carry has a finish that reduces stretch and porosity, and believe it or not, strength. That is why it is such a difficlult balancing act when making Ripstop fabric. Too much finish and the fabric tears like paper. Too little finish and the fabric stretches like umm... umm.... pantyhose. lol. _________________ Steve Ferrel
