Howdy everyone: One of my Christmas gifts was some very soft feeling Ripstop nylon. All of the Ripstop that I have been using is coated and somewhat stiff. This stuff however, is very soft and difficult to work with. (At least for me and my limited expirience.) Can someone tell me what type of Ripstop was given to me? Thanks. Could be parachute Ripstop. Could be Ripstop from the $1.00 per yard from WalMart. Works great for flowing tails. Also works fine for a bedsheet kite. and can be made into a flowform kite, but only with a lot of trouble. For me, anyway.

it's probably fabric store Ripstop which is meant for making windbreakers and jogging suits. This is the same material i used for making my first NPW. Works fine for that due to the excellent amount of lift... but not real good for making flat or bowed kites. It is also heavier than regular coated spinnaker type Ripstop. Based on my untrained hands, speculation and a tag from a Ripstop nylon tent i took apart, I figured that the RSN that I bought from the fabric store was 4 ounce/ yard. MUCH heavier than necessary. _________________ Mark

I have made several kites and stuff from the soft Ripstop in the sale bin and it is ok once you get used to it. I hot tack or use tape a lot to keep things where they need to be. It is a bit heavy but should be durable. The kids like it, have not seen a frown yet with a kite made from the stuff. Makes good line laundry as well.
