I will NOT use is on multi-line kites as Spectra is sooooooo much slicker!!!!

As mentioned the original post wasn't to promote the current use of Kevlar, most especially on the SK Comp fields. It has been replaced nicely with Spectra. Then again, the right tool for the job is always a good idea. I have on occasion used 30# Kevlar, which is about the diameter of thread to fly a ten foot flexifoil ultralight outdoors in zero winds. This combination of VERY thin, Very strong line and a kite that develops some pull makes for a lethal and VERY dangerous combination and I only do this in a controlled access demo field

AND current team flying would be Impossible without Spectra flying line! Although many teams as well as those I've flown on do splice in 10-15 feet of Kevlar onto the kite end of their practice lines, as this almost completly removes the Line Cutting problems when your learning a new maneuver!

Grant - I have to take both of those as compliments, as both are true. Most of us prefer the term Long Timers (as opposed to Old Timer ) which signifies a long time out on the kite fields as opposed to actual age!

For example John Baressi editor of KITELIFE is a member of the Long Timers Club having been calling IN for more then ten years! But is in fact, not very old, by comparison to guys like Vern Balodis or myself! BUT here's a Long Tooth statement for you! I keep a flight log, with all kiteflying recorded for the last twenty years. (Helps a lot when memory fails) My current count for calling IN on the official SK competition fields in individual, team or pairs is at 467 times!

Some interesting reading about Al and the Chicago Fire In the beginning can be found in a KITELIFE article @ http://www.kitelife.com/archives/SEPT991/tangents.htm

Dorsal - I have a couisn who also lives in Tracy, CA. She's always asking me about my kiteflying. Do you fly anyplace in Tracy, or close??

Besides Gang, I just knew that mentioning Kevlar and Spectra in the same line of a topic title would be cause for lots of conversation Twisted Evil

Great post Al.

I've sliced myself on Spectra and Kevlar, and agree about thin diameters being the worst.
The paranoia about Kevlar (and to some degree manjha) gets pretty heated sometimes. It's just line, and will only cut another line if made to do so. BTW, I've seen cotton line cut Spectra, so maybe we should ban those evil cotton-heads! Wink

Thanks Stan - I watched once back in Chicago when a little kid with a $0.99 plastci kite Ran (which little kids tend to do when flying) right into Eric and the Chicago Fire who were practicing on the same field. Brought the entire team down and cut six of the eight lines!

The little girl was pretty young and kinda cute! Eric and the gang even let her keep them company while they retied their lines!
