I used them (sharpies) for my roadsign kite in Dieppe (Fr), black on yellow RSN. The only problem was getting the colour solid enough, so I resorted to colouring both sides as trying to make it blacker (?) on the same side with a second coat only moved it around, the spirit just re-liquidised the first coat. But that was on coated material.

My relatives are Honda Goldwing riders. I made this Rok for them several years ago. It's an example of what I meant by "stippling." It took lots of Sharpies and LOTS of dots/stipples. It has held up pretty well over the years but obviously it's only in black with a bit of gold I don't know what colors would have done by now.
With Sharpies I have the same issue as Snowykite. It is hard to get adequate saturation. At least for me. (Sorry about picture quality, old photos)

Back in design school there were a couple of different brands and styles of markers that used different liquids to carry the pigments. One of the best known and favoured brands was Pantone because of the large palettes and the fact that because they were alcohol based, didn't give you the splitting headache after a long session like the solvent based brands did.

Check your local art supplies stores - take in a fabric sample and have a test with the sample pens on display. The pro markers are also sold individually because you use up some colours faster than others - so you only need to buy the colours you need for the project at hand.

Nice Rok.

And great idea about taking a sample of fabric to the art store. I have seen all the pens for trying out - never thought about taking fabric there.
