Sounds like my light was too direct. I was having trouble seeing the lead pencil on the white as the light was directly over the top of the table. I will try the pencils again, but with the light off to the side a bit and a different colored pencil. With a 9 & 3 year old, I have lots of different colored pencils.

I have used dressmakers pattern transfer paper (like Carbon paper), it comes in blue and white in sheets that may need to be taped together, but it works great and just brushes off with a damp sponge.

I usually use a regular #2 Pencil. Somtimes a white water soluable pencil. It also helps if your sewing table is clear with enough space for a small light underneath!
