I have one. It works, but I was not impressed with the xacto blade getting hot. I was cutting more than melting. Using the round tip works better. The handle does get hot though. Hot enough to get uncomfortable. I use my Hako 936 soldering station now. Have the Steve F's hot cutter on my wish list. _________________ John M |

Hi 300M , Good choice Get one of steves sail cutters. The cutter has two different tips ,one I call the banana blade which is prox 1in. long ,good for cutting webbing and thick stuff. The other is narrow and good as an all around general purpose cutter. Christmas is just around the corner , Get yourself an early gift and enjoy it NOW.

OH, and me with no cash!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ouch....
Maybe I can pry a few pennies from MrsSquid....
BTW I agree that heating a #11 E-Xacto blade does not work well....
I prefer a hot cutter that transmits enough heat to melt and join the ends of the fibers wihtout burning them.
Steve's hot cutter is my favorite for most jobs. it heats up FAST and transmits just enough heat to the cloth.
but I also need a iron to melt small holes i.e. for a standoff on a sport kite, where I need either a round or needle point. for that I use the 5in1 hot tool from harbour freight that you can get for $5 when it is on sale so I get them in quanity so I dont have to change the tips and so I have some to give to budding kite builders that come to the Kite Cavren to learn something or to teach me something about kite buiding. _________________ VR/

Agreed.... seems to be too much of a heat loss between the heating unit and blade.

Squid, maybe I should add post hole diggers, cement mixers, and pneumatic hammers to my tool section _________________ Steve Ferrel

Steel does not transfer heat as well as brass which IIRC is an aloy of copper and tin

And I could use a good 1/2" drill and a Skill Saw too as the ones I have are quite OLD.... _________________ VR/

Cliff, I showed your post to the wife and then Steve's. going to order next week in Nov
Squid, the right tools are nice. I got my nail gun an compressor when I build our shed last year followed by nailer for the porch railing. Cannot believe I waited this long to get one. Like kite stuff, the good ones work real good. _________________ John M |

and here I am complaining about buying a 20 Oz framing hammer, when I should have been buying a framing nailer and compressor.... _________________ VR/
