Any body have a home made jig or tool for slitting Ripstop into widths less than 1 inch ?

I have a tool that does what you mention. It will cut material at any width. It is called a metal ruler and snap blade knife. 
Works for me. Oh, yes, I fold the width of material over twice, and that way I have only a short distance to cut. Les likely to make a booboo that way. |

Steve,
You have seen mine in action.
All,
I wanted a LARGE quantity of ½" 1.5 Oz nylon (oops, I ment to type .75 Oz Nylon... Sorry.) to edge bind kites at a workshop.
I e mailed Steve to see what the thinnest width he could get it in. 1" is the narrowest he can get from his suppliers. He also told me that it is cold cut... I thought it was hot cut, but after looking at the edges thru a jewelers loop, I was convinced, so I cobbled up a ½” slitter:
I went to the hardware store and bought a 36" length of 1/2" Aluminum angle.
Cut 4 pieces about 10” long.
Applied 2 each ¼” strips of 3M F9460PC adhesive I had from a previous kite to one face of two of them, because this adhesive was original designed to stick metals together...
A series of photos would work better here....
Dang I need a digital camera and a web page to post to...
I’ll try to finish explaing later as I Have to get some work done before Nationals!!!!!

Actually, yes the slit .75 oz x 1" is cold cut... but the slit 1.5 oz x 1" is hot cut. I used to get the .75 hot cut, but there was too much inconsistency in the 'smoothness' of the cut. I kept getting rough and un even edges.. there is a fine balance to the correct heat and speed of the fabric going thorough the cutters.... 1.5 oz holds up much better. Anyway, the .75 has a better coating and holds up well to a cold cut. And cold cutting results in a much 'cleaner' cut.
If i could order it in widths less than 1" i would, but there is a limit to how close the slitting machine's cutters can get.

Can you get some photos from your supplier of a machine in action.
I assume they slit down a whole roll 54" in one pass... It would be food for thought and nice to see.

I have a nifty strip jig made by Lindsey Johnson of Oregon. It cuts strips out of fabric up to 60" wide. Won't slit rolls but it is simple and very useful. This is just a sheet of plastic with parallel holes drilled at 5/16 intervals. Two pegs go in the holes and an aluminum cutting guide rests on the pegs. Cut a strip, back of the pegs the same on either side, pull back the bar cut another strip.
This can be used to make strips for surface applique, but i use it all the time for color matched edge binding.

It sounds like yours cuts across the fabric...
Mine cuts down the length of the roll.
LONG narrow pieces of fabric.
The kites I was building took 9 yards per kite...
Long was easyer for me.
Now I am looking at buying an attachment to add to my industrial sewing machine. It takes a roll of 1" fabric and folds it three times and aligins it for your sewing machine to be sewn on as it folds it. More to follow if I get it soon.
I saw it at another kite builders workshop.. I try to visit other builders as often as possiable and just look over their shoulders as they build.
I learnd how to shapen my sissors that way.

Working on the photos.. it is a monster of a machine. I've seen it up close and personal when I went for a tour at NorthCloth. The .75 x 1" that i stock is a custom slit and requires more than one pass as they dont have 54 cutters.

One thing you must realize, and this is discussed in more depth in the Techsheet Section, Article 10, that there is an inherent stretch in Ripstop... In different degrees accross the fabric. You can use this to your benefit when cutting strips of fabric for your edging.
The most stretch is diagonally across the bias and the least stretch is the warp (the 'long' direction - the way Squid cuts his tape). Looking at the chart, the fill (across the width of the fabric), almost has as much stretch as the bias. So..... if you are applying your tape to an edge that has a curve, the best way to cut your tape is across the bias, the second best way is the fill (Nerd's way).
Squids way is great if you need long pieces, but not the best way if you need stretchy pieces.

Steve,
You Nailed it on the head.
Mine dont streatch around tight curves, but it will steatch to work on wider curves, like those on a 7' Cody.
I would say about a 4' radius is easy to do but a 1' radius would be not so easy. I would probally have to cut some bias tape.
I keep one roll of black cut on the bias at all times. It is more effeciant in fabric use...
