I don't use tape. I've learned to love hot-tacking and spray glue. Also, I've started adding an extra 1/8 inch to my seam allowances and try to hot-cut the pieces together before sewing. This makes it reall easie to keep the peices lined up and cenetered together.
Lucky you  Getting to go to Ft. Worden. I'm jealous now

It looks like she hijacked her own thread...
I use seamstic, Spray Mount, Glue Stick, Hot Tacking, Hot Cutting layers Together (fabric welding) and sometimes just plain old water to hold layers together for sewing.
Sometimes I dont sew a kite at all. I use 3M's F9460PC.
It depends on my mood, budget, what I have on hand, the size of the kite, the number of layers and factors too numberous to mention here.
Ft Worden is such a GREAT learning experance!!!!
LOTS of good people who want to share ideas (kinda like here) but with face to face instruction!!!!!
If you have a sail loft handy, ask them if you can hang out to help them... You will learn a LOT about kite building because if you sew RSN or RSP you are just copying some of what they do to build boat sails!!!!!
Also look in their dumpster for great free fabric scraps!!!! or ask them to save them for you in exchange for sweeping the floor or lending a hand when you are not bussy and they are...

I know about the Oregon one too....problem is work and time off and....being able to afford them. Fort Worden is close enough to me that it is not a major event to get to....and it will get me started on the right foot! I hope to see some of you there!

Aiyana,
Don't wait 'until Fort Worden to begin sewing. Jump in and try an easy project. One I like is the transitional tail. Lots of sewing practice, cutting practice, and you gain lots of experience handling the fabric. Any kite bag can stand to have a new transitional tail in it. Steve has the plans on his website.

Well ....I wasn't planning on waiting...but I still need a few things yet.... The long dark nights of winter are coming and a little sewing practice is in the plan! What Kite I want to build is still up in the air....

Yeah, but there are quite a few from south of your border that give you all a run for your money!! Also, I have been attending Ft Worden since 1989. Lucky me!!!
You would think I could build a kite or two by now.
