Just browsing today and ran across an idea that we can probably all use at one time or another. I would never have considered making repairs this way. Thanks, Dave!

Dave G's. idea is pretty slick. super glues in the past were always stiff when they cured ,thus causing cracking . I just learned the kite studio
Stevef has a new and unique super glue that when cured remains flexible.
Its available in black and clear.
I've used it on fittings . Unlike regular super glues it is very resistant to
mechanical shock. Normaly ca's are brittle and fail when impacted.
The clear is called insta-flex . I cant find the black container at the moment but stevef can help if someone has an intrest.

I found some clear flexible CA Glue made by Pacer, called "Flex-Zap", at http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCX68&P=0
Is this the same kinda stuff? My wife is looking for something like that for setting gems into jewelry.
Sorry Steve, but I can't find it on KiteStudio at all. |

Yep, all the glues are in the Notions category of the catalog.... just like we talk about the glues in this Notions forum! There is also some info in the products webpage HERE
I really like the black CA called: IC-2000. It works great when bonding Graphite spars to ferrels and fittings. Remember though, ALWAYS clean the parts with a brush or rag before gluing.
The clear CA is called Insta Flex. I only have samples of it right now but this product will be added to our inventory in our next order. It should work great for Ripstop repairs as Gomberg describes (see Techsheet #70).
Info from vendor:
INSTA-FLEX+™ clear rubber toughened has similar qualities to our black IC-2000™ but can be used in applications where you do not want the adhesive to be seen. The Carbon component of IC-2000™ that gives the CA its black color also contributes to its unsurpassed strength. Since INSTA-FLEX+™ has this Carbon removed, its strength is a little less than IC-2000™ but still superior to standard CA's. When esthetics are important and a flexible bond is required, INSTA-FLEX+™ is your best choice. It forms superior bonds to soft urethane and vinyl plastics. When a joint has a larger than normal gap, flexible CA's provide superior shock resistent bonds. _________________ Steve Ferrel

Just a note about the new black CA glues...
In the golf club building area we have just started using these.
So for people who worry the impact strength still might be an issue, DONT!! LOL.
A golf club glue needs to exceed 7000 psi shear strength to handle a driver head at impact.
The downside is removal. Most 2 part epoxies break loose at 230 degrees F. This stuff requires a higher temp.
C-ya, Jimbo.
PS, when cleaning prior to using the CA, use alcohol, rather than acetone. Acetone leaves a film that the CAs have trouble bonding to or breaking down. |
