So, when I'm working on a project in the kite room (guest room) I often get to a stage where I have to get everything off my sewing table including the machine, spread kite or fabric out to take a measurement or cut a hole, and then reverse the process to start sewing again.

I would like to set up a second "occaisional table" to avoid moving things around. Since there's already a couch in this room (which has to stay there) another table would take up too much room . . . then I got to thinking about a table over the couch. I got a couple of adjustable height saw horses which fold down quite flat to put at each end of the couch. The height is easily adjusted to a level where the table is above the couch. I was thinking of using a hollow core door because it would be lightweight and easy to move, but I need something that is 8 feet long in order to span the couch. Seems that 8 foot hollow core doors are very rare. Looks like I'll have to make something.

Any suggestions?

how high is your ceiling ? I would try a plywood table and that could be in hinges on the wall and lift up to the wall when company is here ! but a kite on board when it up ! then company leaves down come the table a bit like a ironing board on the wall LOL

or pulley to put table up to ceiling this way stuff can stay on the table LOl well a start to think about LOl

A suggestion...

Buy a 4x8 sheet of Luan(SP?) Its what is on a cheap hollow core door. Sells for between 7-12 bucks a sheet where I live.

Also buy a sheet of exterior foam insulation, its pink or teal blue green colored. comes in a few thicknesses and sells for about the same as luan.

Use paneling adhesive to glue the luan to the foam. You can sheet both sides for a more durable bottom and added stiffness. I've made these types of table tops 6 feet wide and 15 feet long, for cutting 60 inch Cordura cloth, and they are cheap and lightweight.

If you keep your edges square you can use cheap door casing trim to box in the edges, or if you have woodworking tools, you can inset a piece of pine around the foam, and in the end have almost the same thing as a hollow core door.

Great idea Jimbo64 Thanks. I have to save this in my ideas box. To mix ideas together, you could have supports on your wall just above your coach. Maybe a little shelf to put you mug of beer when sitting on the coach.

Then set your cutting table like Jimbo64 suggested. You will need two feet in the front and use the shelf for the back with some sort of locking mechanism to hold it in place.

I like the idea of makeing your own work top. Light weight and durable...

Test your adhesive on a scrap of the foam as Acetone attacks the foam.

I would probally use contact cement as i have a bunch of it left over from another project.... and I dont think it has Acetone in it.

When you buy your foam look for a FLAT sheet as some is not quite flat...


It is extruded polystyrene insulation made by Dow if it is Blue or Ownes Corning if it is pink... Trademark colors....
