What's a good, cheap, easy, yet effective way to sharpen scissors at home? Little scissors too.

I use mostly Fiskars scissors and have a little ceramic sharpener they made at one time or another. Best thing to do is find out when the scissor sharpener person is going to be at a local fabric store and take 'em in. More expensive but they get it done right.

I do recall a discussion on sharpening scissors on one of the flyfishing listservers I subscribe to but don't recall the method. Think the general consensus was let a pro do it.....

Get a fine and super fine diamond hone and go to it!!!!!!

I have a set of hones from DMT and I think they have basic instructions on their web site.

Maintain a constant angle!!!!!!!!

If I remember correctly you sharpen the narrow beveled edge and NOT the broad flat edge. Correct Harold?

YUP you hone the little bevel NOT the wide part of the blade!!!!! Practice on a CHEEP pair of scissors you dont care about!!!!!!!

I have the Double Sided Diafold® hones that have a Fine/Extra fine and a Medium/Course one too.

I want a fine/extra fine DuoSharp® plus!!!!!!!!!!!!! but it is kinda expensive...

They should last a lifetime.

BTW one day I decided to see just how sharp I could get a pair of scissors... I started with my Fine hone, went to a Extra Fine diamond hone. I stropped it with a leater strop with 2 diffrent grades of polising compound, then I went to some untreated denim from an old pair of jeans, I cut my thumb BAD. The scissors were so sharp that I could not cut a single thread, as they just pushed htem out of the way, but they did reverse applique too good as they cut the zig zag thread many times...

I recomend you stop with the extra fine diamond hone....

Mr Squid please review for me does it go black, blue, red, green ? rough, course, fine, extra fine in that order? I hit mine with the red or green usually. Don't bother to hone them as they scrape together as they close and will self remove the wire edge.

You have the right order for DMT products

Black = rough
Blue = course
Red = fine
Green = extra fine

I only use the green unless they are bad and I reach for the red.

My black and blue only get used when I modify a pair of scissors or when I have been abusing a knive around the house.

If you were to only buy one hone I would recomend getting the Fine one first and the Extra Fine second....

One more thing,

I have also honed a pair of scissors on a 4" buffing wheel on a bench grinder with the red colored compound (I cant remeber the grit right off the top of my head.

Look at your scissors thru a strong magnifying glass before and after you hone em and WOW it is like night and day.

If you are honing Knife Edge scissors you shoul only have to do the sharp blade most of the time and the anvil type blade seldom.

if you are sharpening thread snips, do NOT sharpen the serated blade...
look closley to figure out which one it is... the bumps are there to hold the thread while the other blade cuts em...

I use Japanese water stones for mine, but diamond stones sound much easier. Maybe if I ever buy some real scissors....

the real advantage in long use is the Diamond hones stay flat.

all other stones wear and you have to lap them flat again.

Too much work for me,

But the large diamond hones are expensive, but good stones are not cheep either.

That is why I bought the Dia fold hones as they were affordable and do a GREAT job. If I were to do it all over again I would buy the fine/extra fine DuoSharp® plus and just skip the rest but $$$$$$$$$$$$ talks
