Ken McNiel is teaching the Mojo sport kite at his workshop in North Carolinal on 6 September.
Here is the major learning objectives to be covered:
How to broadseam sail panels together (this is too cool. It is a boat sail maker's technique to add 3 demetnial shape using curved panels)
“The benefits and negatives of broadseaming sport kite sails” a presentation by Ken.
You will also use Ken’s industrial Bernina sewing machine to bind the Trailing Edge of your kite, so you can see why every kite builder should have an industrial binding attachment for their sewing machine. (yes they do fit MOST home sewing machines.)
Using Seamstick double sided tape to control panel placement.
Ken will be open to any and all questions about sport kite construction and design.
Contact kitesquid for more deatails if you will be in the area. _________________ VR/

Hot diddly damn!
Where in North Carolina??
What's the cost?
Is the workshop all day? That's a Monday, you know. (Labor Day?)
Are there any hotels nearby?
What airport should I fly into?
YES, I'm serious! _________________ "The wind is the perfect reminder of God.

$110 gets you a complete kit for a MOJO standard or UL. You should bring some cash for lunch as it is not provided...

YES untill the last stitch is sewn... Ken will be cutting out the main sail panels ahead of time (white, black or grey ONLY!!!) and you will only have to cut out the accent panels and sew it together.

Yes. It is the day AFTER the Beach Mountian kite festival that some of us WOW, RAF and WACKOS will be attending, so sence I will be in the area I talked Ken into teahing the MOJO!!!!!!! I am SOOOO HAPPY that he agreed.

In Hickory there is a Quality inn and a Holiday Inn Select, just to name a few I found on Orbitz but that was just my first try.

Dennis,
Charlotte(CLT) and Asheville(AVL) are both about 60 miles. Greensboro, NC(GSO) and Greenville, SC(GSP) are both about 100 miles.
There is also some lodging in my town of Lenoir, NC, which is about 12 miles north of my shop. Hickory is about the same distance south and is much larger, so it offers a lot more choices.
Before you make any airline reservations, give me a call.
The kite we'll be doing is a modified pattern. I've simplified it a little so we can make a good attempt at finishing in 1 day. http://bluemoonkites.com/images/temp/mojo_class3.gif

For more detail, here is a copy of the e mail sent out to the three "local" kite clubs. Wings Over Washington, The Richomnd Air Force and Wings Over Carolina Kiting & Okra Socity...
Labor Day weekend kite building workshop!!!!
Ken McNeil has graciously agreed to hold a sport kite building workshop at his NEW workshop in Granite Falls North Carolina on 6 September 2004 which is Labor Day. This workshop is in conjunction with, but not to interfere with nor is it in any way connected with the Beach Mountain Mile High Kite Fly. So if you plan on attending one, you should attend both, I do...
I am also working to bring Ken to the Richmond VA or Washington DC area later in the year to present this workshop again, so if you can’t attend this workshop, stay tuned... No promises as finding an acceptable workshop space and affordable lodging for those traveling is difficult and I want to get as many people from WOW, RAF and WACOS involved as possible. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated. I have received a small packet from Camp Hanover.
Ken will teach the Mojo sport kite that has a Carbon frame and Icarex PC31 sailcloth. In this workshop the following learning objectives will be taught:
1. How to broadseam sail panels together
2. “The benefits and negatives of broadseaming sport kite sails” a presentation by Ken.
3. You will also use Ken’s industrial Bernina sewing machine to bind the Trailing Edge of your kite, so you can see why every kite builder should have an industrial binding attachment for their sewing machine. (yes they do fit MOST home sewing machines.)
4. Using Seamstick double sided tape to control panel placement.
5. Ken will be open to any and all questions about sport kite construction and design.
To read more about the Mojo sport kite we will be building CLICK HERE. The link will take you to Ken’s company, Blue Moon Kites.
Blue Moon Kites’ workshop is located in what used to be the workshop for a textile mill. The workshop has space for no more than 6 participants in the air conditioned portion of the building, but for those that are brave enough or are late in registering, there is also workspace for more but it is NOT air conditioned. First to register with Harold will be, first served... but Harold gets a seat in the air conditioning....
The cost of the workshop will be $110, payable to Ken, which includes all parts to make either a Standard or UL Mojo.
Ken will have your main sail pieces cut out to save time at the workshop but he will cut one sail out in front of the class to demonstrate his favorite techniques.
Main sail color choices are limited to the following (select one):
Black
White
Grey
Spine and wing tip accent colors will be cut out by you at the workshop from Ken’s stock of fabric.
Here is an example of the white kite with a blue spine and red wing tips, a black kite with neon orange and rubin red spine & wing tips, and a grey kite with plum spine and purple tips.
You will be required to bring the following to the workshop:
Sewing Machine in good working order that you can at least thread and hopefully have sewn on. We will be sewing through seam tape and other adhesives. If you have reservations about using your machine for this, Ken’s machine will be available on a shared basis for seaming.
Sharp needles for your machine. Harold recommends Schmetz Denim needles in size 10 or 12. Ken uses a 14, but he also sews MUCH faster than Harold.
QUALITY Sewing Thread. Harold recommends using Dabond Polyester in size 33 from Hang-em-High fabrics; Ken uses Gütermann polyester in all of his kites which is available at most fabric stores. Use what works best in your machine, but it should be 100% Polyester.
Sharp scissors.
Seam Ripper (incase you make an undesirable design modification.)
If you have a favorite sewing chair Harold always brings his to workshops and he recommends you bring yours too if you have room. Comfort is important when sewing. There will be upholstered stacking chairs available also.
A few dollars for lunch as you will probably get hungry. There is Hardee’s, Pizza Hut and Uncle John’s close by. There is also a soda machine and microwave on site.
For other retreat item ideas go to THIS THREAD at Kite Builder dot com’s forums.
Registration for this event will close at Noon on August 19th to allow Ken time to make sure he has all the parts on hand and can cut out all of the sail pieces, so contact Harold ASAP to get on the list!!!!!!!!
Keep em flying,
Harold

Ken may hold another workshop in Chico, CA. Steve Hall posted a message in the GWTW forum that says:
Quote: | If there is enough intrest Ken has agreed to hold a Mojo Building workshop right here in Chico.
There has been some discussion of one that Ken is holding at Blue Moon HQ's on the Kite Builder Forums. We are planning a similar worksop.
We are thinking about holding it in conjunction with the Chico Fun Fly - GWTW Open House and BBQ October 23rd and 24th.
Cost for the workshop is estimated at this time at $150 per person.
This is still in the planning stages, but we need to know if there is enough interest in the workshop to drag Ken all the way to Chico. |
I don't think Steve will mind that I copied his post here (I would have put a URL here, but you have to be a member of the GWTW forum in order to read it). _________________ Gentle breezes...

According to Mapquest it's going to be a 14 hour drive of 865 miles. Unless I find someone else to drive with me, I guess I'm going to have to find an airplane ticket.
I guess I better buy a lottery ticket, don't know how else I will be able to afford the trip... _________________ Gentle breezes...
