Newport is one of my favorite events. It has to be the best setting for a kite competition on the entire east coast. Going after the kiting world's equivalent to the America's Cup is a unique experience.

Too bad it won't happen again.

The following is a notice from the organizers of Newport Kite Festival:

Quote:
The 2004 edition of the North American Cup Kite Championships, held in Newport will be the final in a 13-year run.

We appreciate all of the support from all of the competitors, volunteers, staff and the community. The costs of this event have simply spiraled beyond our ability to break even. There are simply not enough competitors, registrations, donations, merchandise sales, etc., to pay all of the event costs. It is a very hard decision, but the event no longer makes sense to run from a financial perspective.

We will still try to run a mid-July event under a new format and model. Dates and details of next year's event will be announced as they become available. One thing is for sure, look for more fun, sun and kiting next July in Newport.

Sincerely,
Steve Santos & Sue Moskowitz

This is very disturbing to me. I'm a crossover flier who likes flying the stunt kite comps and entering an occasional kite or two in the comprehensives. Newport henceforth for me will be a pale shadow of its former self.
