Three years ago I taught a class making this kite. Here are 4 examples to contrast the paining of fabric vs applique.

This one is white on top with yellow on the face of the kite sprayed with blue Design Master paint.

This is all white with yellow and purple Design Master paint. This one was painted outside on a quite windy day. Notice the lacy look on the edges.

Now here is one with applique. Credit to the Eagles Football club. Chuck's color choice. My color choice, too!

This last one was made by Sharyn for a friend that has a business on the lake. The applique is part of his logo.

The one I made has both applique and Design Master paint. The paint is on the back side of the kite. This is a day with no wind in Reno, Nevada. I ommited the flares in the middle so the graphic would show better.

So which is better, painted fabric or applique. My answer is yes. Twisted Evil

I agree that both techniques have their place!!!!!

Look at anyting by Scott Hampton of Sandy Utah where he uses both techniques.

He ususly paints the fabric before sewing, or at least that is the way I understad it after talking with him.

I missed this thread first time around! And reading the recent activity in fabric painting and printing techniques, I am bumping this discussion back up.

Great examples kiteguy.... I really like the effect on that yellow/blue/green parafoil...

There is a lot to be said for applying color in fades and mixes that you cannot buy by the yard......

YES............. and I must say, painted kites were all over the place in this years AKA Kitemakers' Competiton. More than any other year.

There is definetly a growing interest in these techniques and I am glad to see them discussed here on the forums.... creativity can go in all sorts of direction when the "lines" of applique are broken.

The highest score for visual appeal was also a painted kite (engaging in shameless self promotion).

The 1st place Roc was also Painted.
