I want a set of 10" square templates with round holes from 1" to 8" in 3/8" increments made of 1/8" masonite
then I want a set of circles 1" to 8" by 3/8" increments, these can be 5 to 10 thousandths shy of the stated measure so they will nest with the "hole" templates
I am doing a quad kite with circle cut outs and I couldn't find the right size things to hot cut around. _________________ Randy

So, you are asking for a set of 18 squares, with holes in them, and 18 circles which nest in them.
I'll do it for $300 and probably regret that this is too little. The templates would be made out of masonite.
Seriously though, this is a lot of work. I would use a circle cutter in my drill press to cut the holes.
For occasional use use a compass and maybe a razor knife. Work slowly. _________________ Gentle breezes...

How about a few of these?
They are 'hose clamps' - found in the plumbing supply aisle.
The inside of the circle is smaller than the outside, thus nesting... _________________ Spence

There is a circle cutter tool available at Hancock Fabrics that easily cuts fabric circles in any size from 2 1/2" to 6 1/2". It is made by Quilter's Rule Int'l and sells for about $30. One of the other companies now has a similar tool. I think its circles can go up to 8". Beyond that, it is easy to make circles with a yardstick and the compass attachment, sold in most quilting stores for about $11.
You can use any of these to make yourself templates if you want to hotcut. If you are cutting just a few holes, templates made from posterboard should be sufficent for your purpose. Of course, there is always the nail, string, and pencil approach to making your own compass for circles! |

I ususlay use canned goods..... many diffrenet sizes of cans avaiable for under a dollar each, and you get to eat the stuff that is inside when you are done.... just buy someting that has someting YUMMY in it...
Or, steve sells a set of TRAMMEL POINTS that will hold a 'pencil-type' soldering iron...
now you can hot cut a corcle of almost any diamater.
They clamp onto 3/4" x 1/2" TONY STICKS
The other thing you can do is breakdown and buy that CNC router that you want for your buisness.
Don't buy tools for you buisness unless you see a kite building tie in.... _________________ VR/

I think I will print this comment out and hang it on my wall, I love it.
Oops, I am the only one here in love with kites,
but I love the way you think! _________________ Randy

In graphics work, I've used a trammel bar fitted with an xacto or swivel knife for years and it beats templates by a mile. If you don't need to hotcut, it saves a lot of work. A light dusting of spray adhesive on the cutting surface will hold the fabric flat.
You could hang the hotcutter's cord from the ceiling to prevent tangles. Works for me.

I was in Kevin Shannon's workshop and he had a electrical box installed over his light table with a "Strain Relief" cord comming out of it so he can plug his iron in wihtout having to get on a ladder to plug it in.
Great ideas here!!!!!!
Keep em comming!!!!!!!!!!! _________________ VR/

Aww, you're all just a bunch of amateurs. I asked Dan "Good Looking" Kurahashi how he was able to make so many perfect bird and other shapes in his miniature kites. He replied that he took the paper or other material into work and used the flatbed laser cutter to cut stacks of them. He could program it for any shape he wanted. Circles of any diameter of course were trivial.
So all you really need is an industrial flatbed, laser cutting machine, attached to full blown industrial computer with CAD package. Btw, if you use this idea, can you bring it over to my house so I can borrow it some weekends?
Dave
PS. Kitesquid, THIS is the tool I want. _________________ Fall leaves red and gold,
