|
|
In roks and larger styles, can I use multiple layers of the field fabric for the pie shaped reinforcements? Are five layers of .75 oz Icarex as strong as 3.9 oz stiff dacron? Are four layers strong enough? I have an engel Hot Knife and could stack cut the layers. Then maybe sew a perimeter seam?
Or maybe I could sew a pie shape with a couple layers and turn it inside out?
I'm starting a "Mike Dallmer Genki" and am having trouble matching the color of the field fabric.
Thanks,

Yes you can use many layers of fabric as a reinforcemnet but, I would probaly bond the layers together to make them act as one piece of fabric.
If you are using Icarex PC31 it is problaly stronger, but you said you are using .75 Oz. I have not seen .75 oz Icarex for a LOOOOOONNNNGGGG time, do you have a large stash or where are you geting it?
Another option would be to find some 1 mill or thicker Polyeseter film with a pressure senesitive adhesive on it.... try a sign shop or look at lamination films. I have not tried it but it sounds like it would work. _________________ VR/

Thanks for replying.
What I am classifying as .75 oz Icarex is sold as ".5 oz Polycarbonate Coated Ripstop Polyester" by Hang-Em High. I do have some flourescent green and orange from a couple of years ago, but the Genki will be the new stuff.
The differences seem to be: a definate coated slick side and a more open grained reverse, and a square Ripstop pattern instead of the older rectangular pattern making it harder for me to tell the warp from the weft so I'll have to mark everything with blue masking tape( I have to number all the applique pieces anyway.
I'll look into the bonding techniques. Also in todays #54 Star Online Project are a number of helpfuls from Scott. (Thanks Scott) _________________ It's more fun to fly with a club.

That is Icarex PC31. It has a "Double Ripstop" pattern woven in at about 1 centameter intervals. some of my FAVORATE fabric. Strong and light. It is also Hydrophobic.

IMHO it is unnessesary as that fabric has so little streach in ANY directon. I do not think it is warp or weft oreanted like so many Nylons are..
The Polycarbonate coating locks everything so tight!!!!!! It has a VERY low poroasity.
To bad it costs so much. I would like to make ALL of my kties out of it.
I also wish they made a 1 oz version in white so I could dye it realy deep... _________________ VR/
