Kite squid requested that Kleppin start a topic on a couple of tools. Well I'm not Kleppin, but I happen to have both of the tools. So I thought I would take some pictures and share these tools. First is the cutting board made by lindsey johnson.
Lindsey created his tool based on discussion with Bobby Stanfield and this is the result Basically you give the board a light coating of repositionable spray glue and lay your fabric down for cutting. There are rows of holes on each side for pegs for the cutting rule to rest against. The hole are 1/4" apart and even from side to side. This allows repeatability on the size of strips. the board is designed for use with a rotary cutter and is made out of UHMW plastic. anyway here are the pictures.

I'll have to take a picture (after I clean up my workbench to make it presentable) of what I use to cut strips. It is a long parallel ruler with a metal straight edge taped to it. This allows me to hot cut strips with parallel edges.
I got the parallel ruler for cheap, it was slightly damaged. _________________ Gentle breezes...

This tool will save you hours of complaining. It has multiple uses: making edgings; cutting bargello strips, etc. Jerry cut my pieces for an optical illusion quilt pattern for a kite, and did not get the pieces cut exactly, resulting in my having to fudge some of the squares to make them match. You don't want to hear about my grumbling and the pinpricks in my fingers! Also, the result was not flat because of all the fudges.
Oh, well, it still awsome in the sky after we decided to turn it into a flat kite banner.
If you need to go to the source for this tool, contact our own Knotronda as Lindsey is her husband. |

Cool!!!!!
So it is parrell knife guide.
Great idea.
I assume he used a CNC router or mill to drill the indexing holes to make sure they are accurate. _________________ VR/

The one I have is an early one that he used a gang dril press to make the holes. Lindsey is now making them with a CNC router. It's nice to be able to have tools that can be used for work and kite building! _________________ Robkite

Reminds of an old drafting table with a parallel edge.
Some boards had a green surface. Simalur to the rotere cuter mats. _________________ Always pushing the edges. Just so I don't have to live on'm |

Hi guys,
I'm the wife and I don't have one of my own yet!! Well, if I cleaned out the garage, then I could set up my own work space. But, as it is now, whenever I have big projects I have to go to his shop and beg for space. The new PRT (Personal Robotic Tool) does a wonderful and accurate job of cutting anything Lindsey's creative brain can conceive. How many of you have seen his wooden line holders? If you will be at Long Beach, WA for the Washington State International Kite Festival, you might get a chance to win one or two in the Associated Oregon Kiters raffle.
Anyway, I just had to put my two cents worth in on this subject because I envy those who have the cutting boards and have the time to use them.
Talk to you all later,
KR |
