What is the safe way to attach the wire to a handle making a fid for sleeving loops on a kite? I've run into enough odd mishaps where things give way. I don't want to strip any more skin and meat from my hands. |

Try a loop turner from the fabric store.
I have used a Tatting Needle (about 7" long) or a Tapestry Needle (about 3" Long) both have a blunt point.
If the eye is too small for the Spectra line, I have put a loop of STRONG sewing thread thru the eye and then pass the Spectra thur the loop of thread.
I gave up sleeving line quite a while ago, but I don't fly in competion either.
Sleeving pays off if you use hardware to attach your line to you kite, but most people use knots to attach now days.. _________________ VR/

I don't even use a handle. All my sleeving tools and fids are simple bent pieces of piano wire with a bit of tape on the end to hold it together (and to keep me from loseing them). I use knotloops loops everywhere possible on the stuff I build so I do a lot of them. Never had a single problem. I don't use handles because I keep one or two fids in my wallet (haven't lost one yet )
Otherwise, I'd suggest you just drill a small hole in the wood (slightly larger then your doubled-up wire), then use the wire to push Epoxy Glue into the hole. Put the fid in and leave it for a while. Oh, be sure to use an abrasive pad of some sort on the wire to rough it up otherwise it will just pull right out of the handle.

Thanks for the help. I wasn't sure at first how hard it would be. Testing the first fid last night that has a thick ring washer to grab I tried sleeving army 550 cord for beginners. I learned at least expose a length of the center strands and trim them off to have a smaller guttless beginning to start the dragging the line through the cord. First attempt ended up needing a little knife to get the fid out of the cord. It's best to try to get the initial penetration and the whole length of the fid past the center reinforcing cords all on one side of internal path. It keeps the center cords from jammimg things up while they like to bunch at times. Just had to see if the 550 cord could be done.
The fid gizmo sure is a sweet tool. Once again thanks for the help. |

I use a small latch hook I purchased at a fly fishing shop. This works great for small line. But if you use in too large of line you will find out that the handle is glued in and will pull out. _________________ Robkite
