A Singer 750 likes to break needles with the neddle cetered in the settings. Would the machine be worth having repaired and does anyone have an idea of how much to fix the problem? It's an out of no where break the needle with a metal on metal hitting when the problem starts. Thanks for any help. |

Hi tradewinds,
I am no expert and others will chime in here as well.. but I had a similar problem with a Singer we have here. It turned out that one of the main gears (that was plastic on metal) cracked and the timing was slightly off. Eventually I would start to hear the metal on metal noise (for me it was in reverse) and then pop the needle would break. It ended up costing us about C$60.00-C$80.00 to have it fixed.
Cheers,
Bill |

Sounds true to form for the other pain feature of sluggish spots and the machine just stops. Oiling seemed to help then the problem came back. I'm thinking get another machine. Any ideas of who makes a $100 - $200 machine that handles rip-stop real well? I really dred dragging parafoil panels thru the machine but I can't go industrial. The machine is in a hide away table where it flips down sidways. Do you know if other than Singer machines would fit?
Questions questions questions. Thanks. |

My Simplicity "American Denim" is priced in that range, and has sewn everything I've shoved under the presser foot. Oh, note in the description "all metal gears". That's what you need to look for. _________________ "The wind is the perfect reminder of God.

Thanks for letting me know there are still manufacturers who make all metal geared drives. I guess the old lawn mower bag was too much for the machine a long time ago. Happy sailing. |

The sewing machine people are as nice as kiters .
If you ask for help they will bend over backwards for you .
I got plastic gears for a singer 2000 , cost $15 each , they advise getting a set as the new ones are stronger .

I have several older Singers , 401, 403 and a 500 , all old heavy last for ever machines I paid less than 15 to 45 bucks for at thrift stores .
You don't have to spend much .
Most machines will fit your table . |

I bought a "previously owned" Bernina 830 for 200 bucks... complete with stand.
Dont overlook used machines, there are a lot of good deals out there. However, be sure to make friends with your local sewing machine repair man. Sometimes repairmen only work on machines that they sell. My guy works on anything.
